The Next Mars Rover Will Land In The Lake

in #science5 years ago

After five years of searching for the next spot for the next Mars rover NASA has finally chosen – the Jezero Crater. This name is quite funny as in several Slavic languages – including Czech, my native language – it means “a lake”.

The Jezero crater has a 49-kilometer diameter and the reasons why the next rover will land there is because scientists think that it was filled with water in the past. The reason why they think that is a long gone river delta. Another reason why scientists want to look into the crater is data from a spectrometer that identified clay components and carbonates that could have some relic of primitive Mars life.

The mission will start somewhere between July and August of 2020 as that will be the ideal window for the next flight to Mars.

The rover will not be searching just for signs of life but will be also collecting samples that will be kept in special capsules as NASA plans to pick-up these capsules in the future and bring them back to Earth in cooperation with the European Space Agency.
