The Secret of Rectangle Wombat Poop Discovered

in #science5 years ago

Wombat are interesting animals. And one of the reasons why is because they are the only known animals to poop rectangles. Wombats use them to mark their territory.

Scientists have been wondering how wombats are creating rectangle poop for quite some time now. Now they think it is because of the elasticity of their bowels. As Patricia Yang from the Georgia Institute of Technology says: "The first thing that drove me to this is that I have never seen anything this weird in biology. That was a mystery."

Patricia and her colleagues decided to crack this mystery and started studying the bowels of wombats that died on Tasmanian roads – they compared them with the bowels of pigs. In the end the poop solidifies in the last 25 % of wombat bowels and the last 8 % has such different levels of bowel elasticity that about 2 cm long rectangles get created.
