@walkerland showed me the way to cook the fiddle head : our very first forage

in #selfsufficient6 years ago (edited)

So my doc, yes doc, told me about the fiddle heads. But forgot to tell me how to prepare them. Well @walkerland provided several ways to prepare them.

So here are my photos on our forage, all on the back side of our property.

Old dead fern

So what we did was followed the old dead fern stalks to their base to find the fiddle heads.

I even got the hubby (@alaskatactical ) out to help.

We filled up our mini buckets and a feed scoop, and headed home.
We dumped them in the sink to wash.
I DO NOT SUGGEST WASHING THEM IN THE SINK!
Holly crap did they make a mess and clog my sink, you need to wash and rinse them a few times.

@alaskatactical wants to pickle some, I want to cook them like “chipped beef/shit on a shingle”.
These would be amazing in a white sauce over noodles.
But you have to cook them and follow the directions on @walkerland s post

Thanks again @walkerland 💗

Fiddleheads are so tasty. I remember the first time I had them. A friend had bought frozen ones and I thought they were awful The second time was much better...fresh and delicious. Glad I tried a second time!

Hmm. Good to know.

I have been wanting to try fiddleheads for a while now!
The only problem is there are no ferns around here to pick fresh and to try something for the first time I'd much rather try fresh than frozen.

Not even around the lake edges? Or around creeks or marshes.
We found ours in a low area between two small mounds.

I haven't come across any yet and I go all over in the bush lol

Well that sucks!

Ive never heard of these! Its probably too late in the season here in KY to find any, but Ill look next year!

You could always look during the summer. Easier to spot when they are big and green. Then take mental note on where to look next year in the spring.

love me some fiddle heads! cooked in butter mmmmm

We canned all of ours in pink salt water. I hope they turn out good.
We also plan on getting more 😊
Maybe we will cook them fresh and with butter. Man I am exited to try them! I love brussle sprouts, asparagus and spinach. I will most likely love these.
Mouth is watering 🤤

I really need to try canning them. They are around for such a short time!
