The Man In the High Castle

This series is one of my favorite series that have come out in the last few years, the show is based on a book by Philip K, Dick but all the original material was completely used in season 1 and the 2 seasons after that have been 100% original material written with the help of Philip's daughter and don't lynch me on this but I believe the original material written for season 2 and season 3 is way superior to the material taken from the book, maybe its a matter of perspective after watching all the seasons and reading the book but it gets way more exciting as the seasons pass!

I'm not going to spoil anything of the show, just going to give you a summary because I believe everyone should be watching this show especially if you are a history buff or enjoy military shows/movies and especially if you like science fiction and alternate history! This is my opinion is the best alternate historical show out there so far and I hope that the continued success of this concept encourages more people to produce alternate history shows based on all the wacky scenarios that are out there!

The show stars in an alternate 1962 America in an universe where the Nazis and the Japanese managed to defeat the Allied forces and basically took over the world, dividing it between the Japanese Empire and the Greater Nazi Reich. What you see in the middle between the east and west coast of the old united states is the Neutral Zone, a buffer, lawless region that divides the territories from the Empire and the Reich to prevent border clashes.

The show starts almost 20 years after the end of the war, so these people are already used to living under their new overlords and the show initially explores the lives of citizens on both sizes of the continent, on the Greater Nazi Reich and on the Japanese Pacific States.

This is one of the aspects I enjoy the most about this show, it feels real and the structure of government are in place and after their defeat and 20 years of rule, the people have lost all hope and are adapting to their new circumstance to the point of even embracing their new overlord's cultures and traditions over their own, the resistance is almost dead and assimilation has already started.

I think that what drags me in the most into this show is the human-side of it all.

Nothing is black and white, the "oppressors" are not comic book villains or movie nazis dedicating their lives to be evil and to destroy happiness across the globe, they just feel like people, citizens of an empire living their lives normally, because everything they do is normal and morally accepted, even though there's obviously bad people on both empires there's also good people just trying to work and give a better life to their families.

And of course I can't talk about the oppressors without talking about the "oppressed" which could mean everyone who is not either a Japanese citizen or a German citizen but as stated before, no issue in this universe is black and white, just like there are good people on the side of the empires, there's bad people in those few groups of resistance that's left.

I really love this show because the possibilities going forward into the future are endless, I assure you that even if you are not a history buff you will love this show and just by watching how the alternative USA looks and all the iconography and all the changes will hook you up!

I don't want to keep going after this point because I feel I would start going into spoilery territory and I don't want to spoil anything, this series is enjoyed at its best when watched without spoiling anything for yourself, sit down, grab a drink and start watching it! You won't regret it!
