Blockchains have been around for about 10 years, in the form that we know today - namely cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum or Steem. Although they’re part of our lives for a relatively short amount of time, as they are growing in popularity, so does the requirements for their storage space. Remember, a blockchain is a distributed ledger, which works only if all the participants at the block production process have the same version of it. In other words, they all need to have identical pieces of data, readily available for writing and reading, and provable to be consistent across the entire population of actors. For Bitcoin, this is already proving difficult: operating a full node is not a storage-friendly task.
