About Critical Thinking, Information, and Society - By Carl Sagan, Anno 1995

in #shareables5 years ago (edited)

As I did the unthinkable and opened my Twitter earlier, around lunchtime I saw this image being shared and highlighted in my by SF Mission Twitter HQ for relevance ranked feed.

It was enough to find this book, The Demon-Haunted World, and take a break from the Internet for some hours, long enough to focus on reading some more Carl Sagan. Slightly longer than the four seconds in which everyone decides nowadays, not ten like it was in Sagan’s 1995.

See ya later, nerds.

Edit: The Demon-Haunted World is freely available over at archive.org. Archive.org also offers multiple formats in which Sagan’s book can be downloaded for free and also hosts different Sagan titles, in multiple languages too.

It must be 7 or 8 years since I first read the demon haunted world. I still bring up this quote here every now and then :).

Also, his last interview with Charlie Rose, on the topic of this book, is one that I must have seen at least 5 times. Still so relevant today.

I know what I am watching next 20 minutes. :)

Inform urself about occultic knowledge.

It's pretty much about what this picture describes..
But it also explains why and how.

No, thanks.

That is exactly one of the paths Sagan did shoot down and a rabbit hole I prefer not to venture down. To each their own. :)

That's also totally okay.

You are free. And when you wanna ignore something that's completely free for you to do so.

But keep in mind: the masses are trained to ignore.

Ignorance is strong on this world.

That's also why they dont need to hide that knowledge anymore.. (okkult = hidden)

According to that logic I opted to read about ignorance when deciding to read above mentioned book?

There’s somewhere a fallacy in there.

Is what you claim I should research and educate myself about, anyway tangible? Before calling me ignoramus, or one who opts for ignorance by not yet caring about everything... can we please clear that up?

Because, while I may chose to explore different paths, that doth not make me an ignoramus. In fact... read the above page again. But... it isn’t positive on occult knowledge, it does shoot it down, Carl Sagan often has AFAIK.

Okay you misunderstood me.

For people nowadays is total cool and okay.
That's why I used it.

Not to make you upset.

I dont know you. But I think you will go ur way.

Many ways lead to rome

I think, based on our limited interactions in comments here, we both explore the skeptical thinking.

We just, indeed, travel different paths. But with the same goal, even dare I say ideology (a healthier, more mature society).

We just have our own preferred flavor to explore, to get there.

I don’t think only the one i explore is the correct one. Maybe it even isn’t correct but so far evidence-based science has helped me.

The main question there, in today’s world, is to investigate who ordered whichever research.

Yes. Especially ur last sentence pretty much hits it.

That's why I love voluntarism!

Would be cool to have a talk, to trade information.
Maybe in a year, when we both already have some road behind us ;)

The real irony for this post, given Sagan’s position on technology (see Fredrikaa’s comment) is that it was Twitter’s “for relevance” AI which surfaced that Tweet in my feed, as “you may have missed”.

I don’t know in how many years but I am definitely returning to Europe at some point. It will most likely be a hot rock in the Mediterranean, depending on what happens with the immigration and also crypto, most likely Cyprus otherwise Malta.

Wherever and whenever... consider this an invite. A premature one but an invite nevertheless.
