Hi everyone, I am a Mining Engineering Student from Mindanao State University – Iligan Iligan Institute of Technology. Last May 3, 2018 we had our information drive in Integrated Developmental School – Iligan Institute of Technology. I am here to share and educate you steemians why responsible mining is a partner in attaining sustainable development.

First, what is MINING?

MINING is a mainly a source of mineral resources important for maintaining and upgrading living standards. It is the extraction of valuable minerals and non-renewable minerals or any other geological substances and rare-earth minerals from the earth.

A brief background about the status of mining industry in Philippines, it is considered as one of the most highly mineralized countries in the world and it is known to its richness of mineral resources that could be one of the main sources of economic growth in our country. In fact, the Philippines is the world’s fifth richest country in mineral resources, the planets largest in nickel reserves, third largest in gold and fifth in largest copper.

The country has a total land area of 30 million hectares with an estimated 9 million hectares of land with high mineral potential. And as of July 2016, the total land area that is covered by active mining operations is 696,721 hectares only which is 2.32% of the total land area that has high mineral potential in the Philippines.

Throughout the information drive, we educate students why do we need to mine and we also encourage them why take mining engineering in mostly practical reasons.

As you can see in the pictures, the students are actively interacting and asking questions about their misconceptions about how destructive mining is, on the other hand, we answered their questions one by one and we also discussed some of the basic concepts about mining and how it is part of their daily lives.

WHY DO WE MINE?

Minerals are basic and essential raw materials in our daily living and are vital for economic, social and technological and development that can be extracted through mining. I’m going to point out some common products that came from the mining industry.

AGRICULTURE
Phosphate rock, potash and lime are used in agricultural fertilizers and other mineral products are used in improving soil.

FOOD
Calcium carbonate is used in bread, cakes, soups and cereals, and some other food additives that are manufactured using natural minerals.

UTENSILS
Glasses are made from silica sand and cutlery from metals, usually aluminum or steel. Another is your cooker, it is partly made from metals and cooking pans are generally made from aluminum, steel and copper.

CONSTRUCTION
Raw materials like cements and steel are used in building houses, libraries, hospitals, offices, shops and others.

ENERGY
Energy minerals like coal, oil, gas, and uranium are used to give you heat, hot water and electricity.

TRANSPORATION
Cars, trains, airplanes, boats or ships and bicycles are used for transportation every day and it is all made using metals such as steels and aluminum.

TECHNOLOGY
A smartphone for instance, it contains precious metals and at least 8 more rare Earth metals.
