Effective Lesson!

As an English teacher who has been teaching English for almost 4 years, I always do my best to find the best ways of teaching the language to my students. In this post, I am going to help you to operate an English lesson effectively. All photos I use are from the course book that I use in my lessons. First of all, course books are really helpful for us as they actually show the way to maintain the lesson effectively.

It is always crucial to start the lesson with a warm up. As you can see in the photo above, there might be some words that your students may not know before digging into reading, listening or speaking activities. I usually prefer to start with vocabulary part. By the way, you must make sure that your students learn how to use those words. If they only learn the meanings of words and don't make sentences, it won't mean anything for them.

Reading and Exercise

One of the best ways of teaching the grammar is making it through reading. However, having only reading doesn't make any positive effect on your students. It must come along with a good exercises where they can also learn the grammar through the text. When we look at the text that we have above, we learn the importance of giving vocabulary part at the beginning of the lesson.

If you don't teach them the meanings of the words, they can't guess the meanings of them. When we have a reading exercise, it is important to have the reading exercises in two parts. The first part is usually about general understanding, but the second part focuses on the details of the text. It is a good way to write some sentences about the text and ask them if the statements are true or false.

Teaching Grammar

When you write all rules on the board, they never get what they mean or how they function in daily life, so it is better to ask them some questions related to reading or sentences in bold which are also in reading. You may ask your students to find some word which are matching with the rules in grammar rules part. By doing this, they can learn it by themselves. They should be involved in all stages of learning.

After learning the grammar, it is time to text if they are able to use what they have learned properly. Give them some time to think about the exercises. They can either work in pair or on their own. After they are working the exercises, you can check them out together and explain if there are some missing point in their learning process. Some of them might have some questions.

Practice and homework

After these stages, it is time to make your student do exercises related to speaking. It is really important to give them some word that can help them to make sentences. When the make questions with the words that are listed for them, it is time to take action and have speaking exercises in the class. By doing this, they will learn how to use the tenses they have learned in speaking exercises.

After doing all your exercises and lessons, it is important to give them home work. If they don't repeat what they have learned in class, they will forget them easily. Students always need a reason to be busy with the language at home and you need to support them with some exercises so that they can get better at what they have learned in class.
