My California : The Miwok of Awahni - Yosemite Valley

Awahni - Yosemite Valley

The place that we all know as Yosemite Valley nowadays was already settled 4000 years ago by the Miwok, which called the place "Awahni". In their language "penuti" this means the "place like a gaping mouth". In the pictures below I show you a panorama picture of the valley where you might guess why they called the place like this. The actual name of the valley is derived from penuti. In penuti the word "Yohemite" translates to "some of them are killers". This sound like such a sad but true story.

Der Ort, den wir heute alle als Yosemite Valley kennen, wurde bereits vor 4000 Jahren von den Miwok Indianern besiedelt. Diese nannten den Ort "Awahni" . In ihrer Sprache "Penuti" bedeutet dies so viel wie "Ort wie ein aufgerissener Mund". Unter den folgenden Bildern unten seht ihr auch ein Panoramabild des Tals. Hier könnt ihr dann auch sehen warum die Miwok diesen Ort so genannt haben. Der jetzige Name des Tals leitet sich ebenfalls aus dem Penuti ab. In Penuti bedeutet das Wort "Yohemite" so viel wie "einige von ihnen sind Mörder". Das klingt nach einer traurigen, aber wahren Geschichte.

Here are some more nice pictures that I took of some specific points during my walk through Awahni (Yosemite Valley) which I really liked to watch. I think that I have a good understanding why the Miwok settled down in that valley, it is really beautiful there .. also old Miwok legends tell that the creation of men began right here in Awahni ;)

Hier sind ein paar weitere schöne Bilder, die ich während meines Spaziergangs durch Awahni (Yosemite Valley) gemacht habe und die ich wirklich sehr gerne beobachtet habe. Ich glaube auch, dass ich jetzt ein gutes Verständnis dafür habe, warum sich die Miwok in diesem Tal niedergelassen hat. Es ist wirklich wunderschön. Alte Miwok-Legenden erzählen auch davon, dass der Ursprung der Menschen genau hier in Awahni begonnen hat.

The Miwok Indians of Awahni

The Miwok Indians were not only settling in Yosemite Valley but in the whole area of the Sierra Nevada, a large mountain range which spreads from the north to the south of California. They lived there a peaceful and harmonical live in line with nature. At least until due to the californian gold rush between 1848 and 1855 they lost huge parts of their land and nearly all of the Miwok were enslaved or killed by the "yohemite" (the gold miners and settlers).

Die Miwok-Indianer ließen sich nicht nur im Yosemite-Tal, sondern in der gesamten Sierra Nevada nieder, einer großen Bergkette, die sich vom Norden bis in den Süden von Kalifornien ausdehnt. Sie lebten dort friedlich und harmonisch und im Einklang mit der Natur. Zumindest bis sie durch den kalifornischen Goldrausch zwischen 1848 und 1855 große Teile ihres Landes verloren hatten und fast alle Miwoks von den "Yohemiten" (den Goldminenarbeitern und Siedlern) versklavt oder getötet wurden.

The following pictures show a recreated village of the Miwok Indians that is located in the Valley and that I visited. The first picture shows the central fireplace with three huts around it. The next two pictures show the main building that was used by all villagers and was the heart of village.

Die folgenden Bilder zeigen ein nachgebautes Dorf der Miwok-Indianer, das sich im Tal befindet und das ich besucht habe. Das erste Bild zeigt die zentrale Feuerstelle mit drei Hütten. Die nächsten beiden Bilder zeigen das Hauptgebäude, das von allen Dorfbewohnern genutzt wurde und das Herz des Dorfes war.
