Hijra, in India, is a term given to eunuchs, intersex people, and transgender people. They're commonly understood to be neither completely male nor female, having a recorded history from antiquity onwards as suggested by the Kama Sutra period.
What it means to be a transgender in India? Scmp.com says, India is not a country for them. When a transgender gets raped, cops first mock, saying the person doesn't have the right organ to be raped; what follows next is a series of injustices perhaps greater than the original one for which they came to the police.
So, the initiative taken up in Kerala is just one sweet moment, from the bitter experiences, in the life of the transgendered.
