Howlin' Wolf - Spoonful

This guy was a giant in the blues world, and probably the most well known of the group that came out of Chicago in the 40's. He was something like 6'3" 300 pounds, and he sounded every bit of it. His physical presence was intimidating, and according to eyewitness reports of the day, so was his stage presence.

It's a little hard to describe what I hear in his voice. There passion, but that's not exactly the right word. It's like he's exuding something from a place very deep down inside of him. It's one of those somewhat undefinable qualities that typify great blues artists, and Wolf's got it in spades. And its even more impressive when you realize that he didn't actually write this song. It's a Willy Dixon tune. Willy also recorded and released it, as well as Cream later, but for my money Howlin' Wolf's is the definitive version of this song.
