Chandra Space Observatory - the best images from space for 15 years

in #space5 years ago

Chandra, one of NASA's great observatories, along with the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes, is specifically designed to detect X-rays from hot and energetic regions of the Universe. Due to the high resolution and sensitivity, Chandra observes various objects from the nearest planets and comets to the most distant known quasars. The telescope displays traces of exploded stars and supernova remnants, observes the area near the supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way and detects other black holes in the Universe.
Chandra contributed to the study of the nature of dark energy, made it possible to take a step forward towards its study, traces the separation of dark matter from normal matter in collisions between clusters of galaxies.

Galactic Pyrotechnic Show

This spiral galaxy in the constellation Hounds Dogs is about 23 million light-years distant from us. It is known as NGC 4258 or M106.

In the center of the Flame Nebula

A cluster of stars in an optical image from the Digitized Sky Survey at the center of the Flame Nebula or NGC 2024. Images from the Chandra and Spitzer telescopes are mapped, shown as overlays, and show how powerful X-ray and infrared images help in the study of star formation.

Galaxy NGC 4945

Image of the central region of the galaxy, resembling the Milky Way. But it contains a much more active supermassive black hole in the white region. The distance between the galaxy NGC 4945 and the Earth is about 13 million light years.

Glowing gas in the Milky Way

The region of glowing gas in the Sagittarius arm of the Milky Way galaxy is the NGC 3576 nebula, which is about 9000 light-years from Earth.

Amazing bright super bubble

This composite image shows a superbubble in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC / LMC), a small satellite galaxy of the Milky Way that is approximately 160,000 light-years from Earth.

Inside the Flame Nebulae or Torch Nebulae

This composite image shows a star cluster in the center of the so-called NGC 2024 or the Flame Nebula, which is about 1,400 light-years from Earth.

Galaxy Fireworks

Galaxy Fireworks, or NGC 6946, is a medium-sized spiral galaxy about 22 million light-years from Earth. In the last century, an explosion of eight supernovae was observed within its boundaries, because of its brightness, it was called Fireworks.

Tarantula Nebula

The emission nebula in the constellation Golden Fish was also called the Tarantula Nebula because of its glowing threads resembling spider legs. It is located in a nearby galaxy called the Large Magellanic Cloud, and is among the largest active star formation areas located close to the Milky Way.

The Crab Nebula: The energy of 100,000 suns

The supernova explosion in the constellation Taurus was observed by astronomers on Earth in 1054. After nearly a thousand years, we see a super dense object called a neutron star, left after an explosion, which constantly spews the strongest radiation flux into an expanding region of the Crab nebula. The X-ray data from the Chandra telescope provides insight into the operation of this powerful cosmic "generator" that produces energy in the amount of 100,000 suns.

Supernova remnant W49B

The remains of the supernova W49B, about a thousand years old, are about 26,000 light-years from us. Supernova explosions that destroy massive stars are usually symmetrical, with a more or less uniform distribution of stellar material in all directions. In the W49B, we see an exception.
