DTUBE EXCLUSIVE! | Mission to see a SpaceX ROCKET LAUNCH! - Falcon 9 Block 5, Bangabandhu-1, Cape Canaveral, Florida

in #spacex6 years ago (edited)

Hey everyone!

In this video I try to chase down and witness the launch of SpaceX's Falcon 9 Block 5 Bangladeshi geostationary communications satellite: Bangabandhu-1!

The launch of the Bangabandu-1 was from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida. I'm located in Jacksonville, FL, just a couple hours north, and I really hoped to witness my first rocket launch with my naked eyes! (SPOILER) Unfortunately, we couldn't actually see the rocket from our location. It must have been launching in the other direction around the globe and there was low cloud cover, so even if it would have been slightly visible before rotating the globe out of sight, the cloud cover blocked our vision today.

This was a day of many firsts. It was the first time SpaceX had launched their newest variant of the Falcon 9 Full Thrust, the Block 5. According to Wikipedia:

"Falcon 9 Full Thrust (also known as Falcon 9 v1.2, with Block 3, Block 4 and Block 5 variants) is a partially reusable medium-lift launch vehicle, designed and manufactured by SpaceX. Designed in 2014–2015, Falcon 9 Full Thrust began launch operations in December 2015. The rocket was launched 33 times as of 18 April 2018, and more than 50 launches are planned over the years 2018–2020."

It was also the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications satellite put into orbit: the Bangabandhu-1. Wikipedia says:

"The Bangabandhu-1 (BD-1) is the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications satellite. It was launched on May 11, 2018.[1] The project is being implemented by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and was the first payload launched by a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket."

Fun fact: this satellite is named after the Bangladesh founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Even though this wasn't a successful mission to see the Bangabandhu satellite Falcon 9 rocket launch, it was still a ton of fun trying to chase it down and see it. My brother Dan and I decided after this that we'll buy tickets to a future launch so we can actually drive down to the Kennedy Space Center and get to see a launch close up and also experience an atmosphere of super excited rocket enthusiasts as a rocket takes flight. Very much looking forward to this!!

Any rocket enthusiasts over on the @dtube team?! Space is so cool! :D

Hope you all enjoyed this adventure and the knowledge I shared here.

Enjoy your day everyone!

Peace of content here! good post!

Dude, that is one thing I really want to see!! If I was there with you I'd take an uber as close as possible to the launch site, grab some beers and set up the cameras. Kick back and salute to the wonders of this planet. Bumming you missed it from the spot you were at, but there ya go.

Yeah man, we're going to go see it up close at some point here! Gotta keep my eye on the next launch date!

I feel a night launch would be easier to spot :)
