Andrómeda
El canal se extendía por cientos de kilómetros, atravesando en su camino varias montañas y lechos de antiguos ríos, hasta llegar a un gigantesco lago artificial perfectamente circular, en su centro una isla albergaba las bien conservadas ruinas de una antigua ciudad, los edificios tenían un aspecto sospechosamente parecido al de la antigua Perseo, la hoy casi olvidada primera colonia humana, fuera del sistema solar.
Estas edificaciones debieron ser abandonadas al menos diez a quince mil años atrás, sus calzadas y edificios lucían casi inalteradas, cortesía de las escasas fuerzas erosivas del planeta, por su tamaño y el de sus edificios habitacionales, debió haber sido muy populosa, tal vez unas quinientas o seiscientas mil personas, pero hoy no había rastro de ellas.
La teniente Romina Fukuhara, una ingeniero ambiental del Consorcio, encabezaba la expedición, fueron encomendados a explorar un sector nunca visitado del brazo del Escudo-Centauro, en busca de planetas con condiciones de habitabilidad y recursos minerales que pudieran ser explotados.
Tras ubicar este planeta y notar la compatibilidad atmosférica con los requerimientos humanos, decidieron explorarlo en busca de posibles muestras de vida, los sensores de largo alcance mostraron la ausencia de señales de ésta, sin embargo, mostraron la presencia de lo que parecía un antiguo asentamiento extraterrestre.
Su sorpresa sería mayúscula, cuando encontraron lo que parecía ser compatible con una ciudad humana de más de diez mil años de antigüedad. Tras descender en su solitario centro, encontraron que todo indicaba que sus habitantes la habían abandonado por alguna desconocida razón, no había ninguna señal de haber ocurrido una catástrofe natural, o accidente de alguna naturaleza que alterara la vida de la ciudad, simplemente parecía haber sido olvidada.
La ciudad estaba completamente desolada, las habitaciones estaban ordenadas, pero sin ningún tipo de artículo personal que diera pistas de sus antiguos habitantes, no había la más mínima duda de que se trataba de alguna antigua colonia humana, pero esta zona nunca antes fue visitada.
Todo indicaba que se debía tratar de una colonia formada por alguna de las ciento cincuenta naves colonizadoras que salieron de la Tierra varias decenas de miles años atrás, por lo visto el asentamiento había prosperado lo suficiente como para lograr la adecuación de la atmósfera y la creación de ciudades satélites al asentamiento original, con una población considerablemente alta, esta tenía la apariencia de ser una de ellas.
Tras verificar que aun cuando todo estaba inalterado, tampoco había rastros de los antiguos habitantes, decidieron continuar la exploración al siguiente punto de interés que fue detectado desde la órbita, antes del descenso al planeta, un pequeño asentamiento justo al norte de un pequeño mar interior del cual se originaba el canal que llenaba el lago en el que se encontraba esta ciudad.
Tan pronto se aproximaron, pudieron notar la presencia de la nave colonizadora y a su alrededor se había construido un pequeño poblado, tal como una vez sucedió en Perseo, las lecturas no indicaron ninguna presencia de emisiones electromagnética que delatara el funcionamiento de algún dispositivo electrónico en la colonia.
La nave era exactamente igual a la Perseo, en su costado tenia escrito, en el antiguo lenguaje originario de la tierra, la palabra Andrómeda. En efecto era una de las ciento cincuenta naves colonia. ¡Cuán lejos había llegado en su búsqueda de un mundo habitable!, pero ¿por qué lo habían abandonado?, después de haber logrado hacerlo prosperar y ¿por qué razón, de repente, su mundo había muerto?
En el interior de la nave pudieron observar que aparentemente todos los sistemas de la Andrómeda habían sido adecuadamente desactivados, por lo que con suerte debían mantenerse aun operativos; después de conectar una fuente de alimentación auxiliar, lograron despertar a la inteligencia artificial de la nave y activarla en el modo de emergencia para que atendiera a los requerimientos de personas no autorizadas, la IA se activó en modo conversacional.
-Por favor identifíquese, y explique el motivo de su activación en modo de emergencia. – inició la IA
-Teniente Romina Fukuhara, de la nave de exploración LB-345, somos descendientes de la tripulación de la nave colonizadora Perseo- respondió Romina – Estamos en misión de exploración y hemos encontrado su planeta y está abandonado, solicitamos el protocolo de activación de tus bancos de datos para conocer el motivo de esto y el destino de los habitantes de la colonia-
-Por favor teclee la clave maestra para la activación-, Romina. tecleo la antigua clave, heredada de la Perseo y tras ello, la IA, liberó la seguridad de los bancos de datos dejándoles conocer la información que solicitaron.
La estrella madre de Andrómeda había entrado en un ciclo de alta actividad, la emisión de rayos cósmicos y rayos gamma se elevó notablemente, el planeta no contaba con una capa de ozono, ni un campo magnético lo suficientemente intenso como para repeler el bombardeo, por lo que fue necesario abandonar la colonia, que para entonces tenia cuatrocientos cincuenta mil habitantes, en sesenta naves arca generacionales, tomando rumbo al brazo de Norma y de ahí a la región oscura de la galaxia.
Los descendientes de Perseo sabían ahora que, en alguna parte entre el brazo del Escudo-Centauro y la región no visible de la galaxia, podía existir otra civilización humana, proveniente de la nave Andrómeda; una civilización probablemente muy diferente a la de ellos. Esta nueva situación ameritaba el retorno al más próximo puente, para transmitir la información y aguardar por nuevas instrucciones.
Andromeda
The canal stretched for hundreds of kilometers, crossing several mountains and beds of ancient rivers, until it reached a gigantic perfectly circular artificial lake, in its center an island housed the well-preserved ruins of an ancient city, the buildings had a look suspiciously similar to that of ancient Perseus, the now almost forgotten first human colony, outside the solar system.
These buildings had to be abandoned at least ten to fifteen thousand years ago, their roads and buildings looked almost unchanged, courtesy of the planet's erosive forces, because of its size and that of its residential buildings, it must have been very populated, perhaps five or six hundred thousand people, but today there was no sign of them.
Lieutenant Romina Fukuhara, an environmental engineer of the Consortium, headed the expedition, were entrusted to explore a sector never visited on the arm of the Centaur-Shield, in search of planets with habitability conditions and mineral resources that could be exploited.
After locating this planet and noticing the atmospheric compatibility with the human requirements, they decided to explore it in search of possible life samples, the long range sensors showed the absence of signs of it, however, they showed the presence of what looked like an ancient settlement alien.
Their surprise would be great when they found what seemed to be compatible with a human city more than ten thousand years old. After descending in their abandoned center, they found that everything indicated that its inhabitants had abandoned it for some reason, there was no sign of having occurred a natural catastrophe, or accident of any nature that altered the life of the city, it simply seemed to have been left behind.
The city was completely desolate, the rooms were neat, but without any personal article that gave clues of its former inhabitants, there was not the slightest doubt that it was some ancient human colony, but this area was never visited before.
Everything indicated that it should be a colony formed by one of the 150 colonizing ships that left the Earth several tens of thousands years ago, apparently the settlement had prospered enough to achieve the adaptation of the atmosphere and creation from satellite cities to the original settlement, with a considerably high population, this had the appearance of being one of them.
After checking that even when everything was unchanged, there were no traces of the ancient inhabitants, they decided to continue the exploration to the next point of interest that was detected from orbit, before the descent to the planet, a small settlement just north of the lake from which originated the channel that filled the lake in which this city was located.
As soon as they approached, they could notice the presence of the colonizing ship and around it a small town had been built, just as it happened in Perseus, the readings did not indicate any presence of electromagnetic emissions that betrayed the functioning of any electronic device in the colony.
The ship was exactly the same as the Perseus, on its side had written in the ancient original language of the earth the word Andromeda. In effect it was one of the one hundred and fifty colony ships. How far it had come in it search for a habitable world! But why had they abandoned him? After having succeeded in making it prosper and why, suddenly, his world had died?
Inside the ship they could see that apparently all the systems of the Andromeda had been properly deactivated, so that with luck they should remain operative; after connecting an auxiliary power supply, they managed to restart the artificial intelligence of the ship and activate it in emergency mode to meet the requirements of unauthorized persons, the AI was activated in conversational mode.
-Please identify yourself, and explain the reason for your activation in emergency mode. - started the AI
-Lieutenant Romina Fukuhara, of the LB-345 exploration ship, we are descendants of the crew of the colonizing ship Perseus - Romina replied - We are in exploration mission and we have found your planet and it is abandoned, we request the activation protocol of your banks of data to know the reason for this and the fate of the inhabitants of the colony-
-Please type the master key for activation-, Romina. typed the old key, inherited from the Perseus and after that, the AI, released the security of the data banks by letting them know the information they requested
The mother star of Andromeda had entered a cycle of high activity, the emission of cosmic rays and gamma rays rose significantly, the planet did not have an ozone layer, or a magnetic field strong enough to repel the bombardment, what was necessary to leave the colony, which by then had four hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants, in sixty arca generational ships, taking direction to Norma's arm and from there to the dark region of the galaxy.
The descendants of Perseus now knew that somewhere between the arm of the Centaur-Shield and the non-visible region of the galaxy, there could be another human civilization coming from the Andromeda ship; a civilization probably very different from theirs. This new situation deserved the return to the next bridge, to transmit the information and wait for new instructions.
