Regreso a Marte
El crucero fijó su órbita en el punto Langrage L2 del cuarto planeta del sistema, desde ahí, se llevaría a cabo el desembarco de los exploradores, una nave los llevaría primero a las proximidades de una estación orbital abandonada, que según los registros había servido de punto intermedio del intempestivo éxodo humano del planeta, cuando fallaron los sistemas de control atmosférico de la colonia.
La estación espacial no tenía ninguna información útil, las computadoras no estaban operativas y tratar de restaurar una tecnología tan vieja, no era algo que pudieran hacer en tan poco tiempo, decidieron recuperar los dispositivos de almacenamiento y abandonar el lugar. Recorrer la colonia del planeta sería más interesante, el hecho de que haya sido abandonada repentinamente daba la oportunidad de encontrar muchos artículos personales dejados atrás, así como sistemas de cómputo abandonados con información útil sobre la vida en ella.
La nave permaneció en órbita cerca de la estación espacial y desde ahí salió el transportador con los quince exploradores, los sensores de largo alcance, mostraron que no había ningún tipo de señal electromagnética ni térmica. Al sobrevolar la colonia pudieron ver un panorama desolador, las cúpulas, que mantenían parcialmente su forma gracias a la presión atmosférica interna, habían colapsado dándoles la apariencia de un balón desinflado.
No sería posible el ingreso por el puerto de desembarco de la sección principal, pues en ese sector la cúpula había caído sobre la entrada, así que decidieron ingresar por la sección de granjas, donde estaba en mejores condiciones y había una entrada para la circulación de los camiones que transportaban minerales de las minas cercanas.
Saul Stein, el líder de la expedición, fue el primero en descender del transportador, se dirigió a la entrada y tras manipular los controles y comprobar lo obvio, que no funcionaban, usó una antorcha de plasma para cortar las bisagras de las dos puertas, que luego derribaron con un cable unido a un malacate, no hubo ningún tipo de descompresión, obviamente, las cúpulas habían colapsado hace mucho tiempo.
Usaron tres vehículos octópodos para ingresar en las ruinas de la colonia, una suerte de arácnidos mecanizados, con la capacidad de desplazarse sobre cualquier tipo de terreno, sin importar lo abrupto que fuera. Se habían dividido en equipos de cinco para hacer más rápida la exploración, dos de los grupos se dirigirían a las periferias de la llamada zona de exclusión, que separaba la sección de las granjas y sectores habitacionales de los pobladores de menores recursos, de la zona de viviendas de lujo, donde habitaban los de mayor poder adquisitivo y además contenía las instalaciones de turismo y centros comerciales, a esta sección se dirigiría el tercer grupo que estaría encabezado por Saul.
Apenas ingresar, pudieron darse cuenta del aterrador panorama que les esperaba al adentrarse en la colonia, los campos de cría de ganado estaban cubiertos por cadáveres parcialmente momificados de reses, que al parecer habían sido abandonadas durante la abrupta huida de los habitantes, los enormes y extraños cadáveres animales resultaban morbosamente interesantes para los exploradores, quienes nunca habían visto animales de granja de ese tamaño.
Lo siguiente que encontraron los estremeció e impresionó como nunca antes, en las proximidades de uno de los portones de acceso de la zona de exclusión, una montaña de no menos de quinientos cadáveres humanos medio descompuestos y medio momificados que por alguna desconocida razón habían sido apilados en aquel lugar, esto fue lo primero que les demostró el horror de lo que había sucedido en esta colonia. Varios de los exploradores, para quienes ver la muerte tan de cerca era extraño, estuvieron a punto de volver su estómago, cuando las personas morían no eran abandonadas para podrirse en las calles, eran llevadas a los incineradores o recicladores.
El grupo que Ingresó a la zona de residencias de lujo, siguió encontrando escenas parecidas en su camino, así como cadáveres tanto humanos como animales abandonados solos a su suerte en cualquier lugar. Explorando las residencias, el cabo Luis Shimizu encontró, en una especialmente lujosa, varios equipos de cómputo y sistemas de transmisión que luego serían transportados íntegramente a la nave, junto a ellos varios cadáveres muy bien conservados, de los que parecían ser cuatro mujeres y tres hombres jóvenes.
Los equipos que recorrieron las viviendas de los sectores de bajos recursos, encontraron en muchas de ellas los cuerpos de quienes dedujeron eran las familias que las habitaban, en algunos casos recostados en las camas o el piso de las habitaciones y en otros, apaciblemente sentados en la sala de las casas, como si se hubiesen rendido calmadamente a esperar su destino.
Al inspeccionar las instalaciones de ingeniería pudieron notar que la estación de transmisión había sido intencionalmente averiada y junto a sus controles se encontraron los restos de varias personas que tal vez estuvieron hasta sus últimos momentos intentando repararla.
Después de pasar casi tres días recorriendo todo el lugar y de recabar todos los dispositivos de almacenamiento de datos y de computo que encontraron se retiraron a la nave, nada los podía haber preparado para lo que vivieron en este lugar. La exploración de las colonias de las lunas de los gigantes gaseosos había sido diferente, allá todo parecía haber sido limpiado antes de ser dejado atrás, no hubo restos ni humanos ni de ningún otro ser vivo, se trató sólo de recabar información de las computadoras parcialmente operativas y de inspeccionar y colectar algunos pocos artículos personales olvidados.
La colonia del cuarto planeta se había convertido en algo que era completamente desconocido para ellos, un cementerio, uno donde parte de la humanidad había perecido masivamente y de forma desconocida.
De regreso en el crucero en el punto L2 de la orbita del planeta, Saul examinaba junto al grupo de historiadores encargados de inspeccionar los objetos traídos del planeta, los equipos recolectados por el cabo Shimizu, en aquella residencia lujosa, en uno de los dispositivos de transmisión pudo encontrar un mensaje dejado por quien dedujo era uno de los cadáveres hallados en aquel lugar, un video en el que un demacrado joven de tez morena y largos cabellos negros, explicaba que fueron abandonados a su suerte en el planeta, después de que los dispositivos de control atmosférico habían fallado, un mensaje que nunca fue radiado, pues la estación de transmisión fue saboteada. La colonia del tercer planeta había mostrado a los humanos un aspecto de sus ancestros que nunca habían esperado, una faceta de la humanidad que era ajena a ellos y que los dejo llenos de incertidumbre sobre si, en realidad, deseaban seguir tratando de conocer su pasado.
Return to Mars
The cruiser fixed its orbit at the Langrage point L2 of the fourth planet of the system, from there, the disembarkation of the explorers would be carried out, a ship would take them to the vicinity of an abandoned orbital station, which according to the records had served intermediate point of untimely human exodus from the planet when the colony's atmospheric control systems failed.

Touring the colony of the planet would be more interesting, the fact that it was suddenly abandoned gave the opportunity to find many personal items left behind, as well as abandoned computer systems with useful information about life in it.
The spacecraft remained in orbit near the space station and from there the transporter left with the fifteen explorers, the long-range sensors, showed that there was no type of electromagnetic or thermal signal. When flying over the colony they could see a bleak panorama, the domes, which partially maintained their shape thanks to the internal atmospheric pressure, had collapsed giving them the appearance of a deflated balloon.
It would not be possible to enter the port of disembarkation of the main section, because in that sector the dome had fallen over the entrance, so they decided to enter through the section of farms, where it was in better condition and there was an entrance for the circulation of the trucks that transported minerals from nearby mines.
Saul Stein, the leader of the expedition, was the first to descend from the transporter, went to the entrance and after manipulating the controls and checking the obvious, which did not work, he used a plasma torch to cut the hinges of the two doors, that they later demolished with a cable attached to a winch, there was no decompression, obviously, the domes had collapsed a long time ago.
They used three octopod vehicles to enter the ruins of the colony, a sort of mechanized arachnids, with the ability to move on any type of terrain, no matter how abrupt it was. They had divided into teams of five to make the exploration faster, two of the groups would go to the peripheries of the so-called exclusion zone, which separated the section of the farms and rooms of the less well-off residents, from the area of luxury housing, where the residents of greater purchasing power lived and also contained the facilities of tourism and shopping centers, this section would address the third group that would be headed by Saul.

The next thing they found they shocked and impressed as never before, in the vicinity of one of the access gates of the exclusion zone, a mountain of no less than five hundred human corpses, half decomposed and half mummified, which for some unknown reason had been stacked in that place, this was the first thing that showed them the horror of what had happened in this colony. Several of the explorers, for whom seeing death so closely was strange, were about to turn their stomachs, when people died were not abandoned to rot in the streets, were taken to the incinerators or recyclers.
The group that entered the area of luxury residences, continued to find similar scenes on their way, as well as human and animal corpses abandoned alone to their fate in any place. Exploring the residences, Corporal Luis Shimizu found, in an especially luxurious one, several computers and transmission systems that would then be transported entirely to the ship, along with several well-preserved corpses, of which there seemed to be four women and three young men.
The teams that visited the homes of low-income sectors, found in many of them the bodies of those who deduced were the families that lived there, in some cases lying on the beds or the floor of the rooms and in others, peacefully sitting in the room of the houses, as if they had surrendered calmly to wait for their destiny.
When inspecting the engineering facilities they could notice that the transmission station had been intentionally damaged and with their controls were found the remains of several people who perhaps were until their last moments trying to repair it.
After spending almost three days traveling all over the place and collecting all the data storage and computing devices they found, they retired to the ship, nothing could have prepared them for what they lived in this place. The exploration of the moons colonies of gas giants had been different, everything seemed to have been cleaned before being left behind, there were no remains of humans or any other living being, it was only to collect information from computers partially operatives and to inspect and collect a few forgotten personal items.
The colony of the fourth planet had become something that was completely unknown to them, a cemetery, one where part of humanity had perished en masse and in an unknown way.
Back on the cruise at point L2 of the orbit of the planet, Saul examined with the group of historians in charge of inspecting the objects brought from the planet, the equipment collected by Corporal Shimizu, in that luxurious residence, in one of the devices of Transmission was able to find a message left by the one who deduced was one of the corpses found in that place, a video in which a emaciated young man with dark complexion and long black hair, explained that they were abandoned to their fate on the planet, after the Atmospheric control devices had failed, a message that was never radiated, as the transmission station was sabotaged. The colony of the third planet had shown humans an aspect of their predecessors that they had never expected, a facet of humanity that was alien to them and that left them full of uncertainty about whether, in reality, they wanted to continue trying to know their past.
