Semana santa - The name of this Spanish holiday is translated as Holy or Holy Week and represents the annual celebration of Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, begins on Sunday exactly one week before Easter (Palm Sunday) and ends on the Day of Resurrection of Christ. A special highlight is the celebration of the Holy Week in Andalusia.
Every day during the week, several processions (Spanish Pasos), belonging to local religious brotherhoods (Spanish Cofradías, Hermandades) pass through the cities of Andalusia.
Among the participants in the processions, the most important role is given to the so-called "Porters" (Costaleros), because they must carry huge heavy and magnificently decorated platforms or thrones (Spanish Pasos) with the figures of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, depicting different scenes of life, death and the resurrection of Christ.
