Tras llegar a Baiona, descansamos en la playa y al atardecer quise visitar el famoso Parador Nacional. Me acerqué a sus puertas pero sólo estaba permitido entrar a los que se alojaban en él. No me dejaron.

Sin embargo, hay un paseo muy agradable que bordea toda la península, el Monte Boi, donde se sitúa el Parador. Pensé que podía ser un paseo ideal.

El Parador Nacional ocupa el castillo de Monterreal restaurado. Lo han rehabilitado y han hecho de él un hotel de lujo con unos bellísimos jardines.

Hay una larga y milenaria historia en esta zona porque el Monte Boi ha sido relevante desde tiempos casi inmemoriales.

Tenemos constancia de que en el siglo II a.C aquí había un castro celta en forma de fortaleza amurallada. En el año 60 a. C., Julio César lo conquistó y para doblegarlo definitivamente tuvo que perseguir a los rebeldes celtas hasta las Islas Cíes que se encuentran en el comienzo de la ría de Vigo.

Mientras bordeo esta fortaleza voy pensando en toda la historia que por aquí ha tenido lugar.

Por la parte sombreada de la península se divisan perfectamente y con nitidez las Islas Cíes que Julio Cesar tuvo que atacar.

A lo largo de los años, la fortaleza fue pasando progresivamente de mano en mano entre los diferentes pueblos que por aquí pasaron: romanos, visigodos y musulmanes, aportaron cada uno detalles de su cultura.

Durante el paseo, paso al lado de algunos torreones y almenas. Éstos edificios sufrieron contiendas bélicas porque este castillo fue atacado en muchas ocasiones. En concreto, la flota portuguesa invadió la zona y también, la fortaleza fue atacada por piratas y corsarios, entre otros por el famoso Francis Drake.

Por estar situado en la entrada de la Ría de Vigo, el Monte Boi fue un punto estratégico muy importante durante siglos. Baluarte defensivo del territorio marítimo de las Rías Bajas.

El verdadero castillo de Monterreal se construyó en el siglo XII. Pero el edificio no se completó, con las dimensiones fortaleza actual, hasta que se terminó su construcción en el siglo XVI por el empeño de los Reyes Católicos.

Fue precisamente el Conde de Gondomar quien lo terminó y lo renombró como Castillo de Monterreal, en honor de los Reyes Católicos.

En el siglo XV y XVI, Baiona tuvo su punto álgido de desarrollo porque era único puerto que tenía el privilegio de comerciar con el extranjero.

La villa de Baiona es destacable en la historia porque el 1 de marzo de 1493 Martín Alonso Pinzón, con la carabela Pinta, retornó a las costas de Galicia tras el primer viaje de Colón a América. Baiona fue, por tanto, la primera ciudad europea que tuvo conocimiento del descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo.

Hay una reproducción, en el puerto deportivo de Baiona, de la carabela Pinta para recordar ese 1 de marzo de 1493 en que retornó tras haber descubierto América casi 6 meses antes.

Según voy bordeando la fortaleza, paso de la zona sombreada a la zona soleada. Pienso que es posible que hoy tengamos un bonito atardecer.

Hay un contraluz muy potente cuando fotografío una fuente o una hortensia. El sol se ocultará por el mar. Tal vez se vea una puesta de sol tan bonita como la de A Guarda.

Al completar el periplo, encuentro una playa formada por la acumulación de muchísimas conchas.

Como hay una gran bajamar, en una roca cercana observó una serie de lapas adheridas a una grieta.

Al terminar el paseo hay un hórreo y un cruceiro que adornan la entrada al castillo.

Decido esperar un poco y esperar a la puesta de sol. Tal vez sea magnífica.

Sin embargo, a última hora observo que hay una nube que amuralla el horizonte. Mañana se prevé mal tiempo y las nubes ya están llegando.

Desafortunadamente, el sol se oculta tras este muro nuboso. No es lo que yo esperaba. Aunque, pensándolo bien, nunca antes había visto una puesta de sol así...

No me siento frustrado pues el color y la silueta azul de las Islas Cíes otorgan al entorno un aspecto mágico y telúrico. Mientras escucho las olas rompiendo en el arenal, siento paz y tranquilidad.

Bordering the castle of Monterreal

After arriving in Baiona, we rested on the beach and at dusk I wanted to visit the famous National Parador. I approached its doors but only those who were staying in it were allowed to enter. They did not let me.

However, there is a very pleasant walk that borders the entire peninsula, Mount Boi, where the Parador is located. I thought it could be an ideal ride.

The National Parador occupies the restored Monterreal castle. They have rehabilitated it and made it a luxury hotel with beautiful gardens.

There is a long and ancient history in this area because Mount Boi has been relevant since almost time immemorial.

We have proof that in the second century BC there was a Celtic fort in the form of a walled fortress. In the year 60 a. C., Julio César conquered it and to bend it he definitely had to chase the Celtic rebels to the Cíes Islands that are at the beginning of the Vigo estuary.

While I border this fortress I am thinking about the whole story that has taken place here.

On the shaded part of the peninsula the Cíes Islands that Julio Cesar had to attack are clearly and clearly seen.

Over the years, the fortress was progressively passing from hand to hand between the different towns that passed through here: Romans, Visigoths and Muslims, each contributed details of their culture.

During the walk, I pass by some towers and battlements. These buildings suffered warfare because this castle was attacked on many occasions. Specifically, the Portuguese fleet invaded the area and also, the fortress was attacked by pirates and privateers, among others by the famous Francis Drake.

Being located at the entrance of the Vigo estuary, Mount Boi was a very important strategic point for centuries. Defensive bastion of the maritime territory of the Rias Bajas.

The real Monterreal castle was built in the 12th century. But the building was not completed, with the current strength dimensions, until its construction was completed in the 16th century by the efforts of the Catholic Monarchs.

It was precisely the Count of Gondomar who finished it and renamed it as Monterreal Castle, in honor of the Catholic Monarchs.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Baiona had its peak of development because it was the only port that had the privilege of trading abroad.

There is a very powerful backlight when I photograph a fountain or hydrangea. The sun will be hidden by the sea. Maybe you will see a sunset as beautiful as that of A Guarda.

Upon completing the journey, I find a beach formed by the accumulation of many shells.

As there is a great low tide, on a nearby rock he observed a series of barnacles attached to a crack.

At the end of the walk there is a granary and a crossing that adorn the entrance to the castle.

I decide to wait a bit and wait for the sunset. Maybe it's magnificent.

However, at the last minute I observe that there is a cloud that walls the horizon. Tomorrow is bad weather and the clouds are coming.

Unfortunately, the sun is hidden behind this cloudy wall. It's not what I expected. Although, thinking about it, I had never seen a sunset like this before ...

I am not frustrated because the color and blue silhouette of the Cies Islands give the environment a magical and telluric appearance. While I hear the waves breaking on the sand, I feel peace and tranquility.
