Lexicon of spirit animals: turtle

Mode of life:

Turtles belong to the peaceful amphibian reptile species and have been existing for more than 200 million years. Of the roughly 250 turtle species scattered over Europe, Africa, Asia and America there are 7 sea turtle species and 180 freshwater turtle species, while the rest are land-dwelling tortoise species. Most notable characteristic of all turtle species is the shell that covers the turtle's back and chest. Instead of real teeth, they have serrated ridges along the inside of their beaks that simulate teeth, allowing them to tear sea grasses asunder or scrape algae off of the ocean bottom. For some species a powerful jaw is also helpful to crush hard-shelled animals. Additionally, turtles have very good eyesight and olfactory sense; by means of spatial orientation and power of observation they not only recognise dangers but also detect food sources and a breeding mate. While most freshwater turtles are not larger than 10-30 cm in size, sea turtles and the Galapagos turtoise can measure more than 1 meter in size. Most species are herbivorous and poikilothermic, which means they are in need of the sunlight's warmth. Like all reptilians, turtles reproduce by means of laying eggs, which are being placed into carved-out pits. Interestingly enough, the mother leaves thereafter and won't dedicate herself to the child-rearing process, which is why the turtle nests are often exposed to all kinds of dangers such as the exploitation by other animals or humans. It is said that out of a 1,000 turtle eggs only one turtle will become old. Freshwater turtles usually become 30-40 years old, while sea turtles can become up to 100 years old. The Galapagos turtoise can even exceed 200 years of age.

Spiritually light aspects:

Connecting with the turtle teaches us patience, introspection and sangfroid. Aware of the relativity of time, the turtle mumbles:" instead of writhing in agony just observe what is happening to create an inner distance to emotional whirlpools that are not indicative of your essential identity to begin with. Follow your own pace and don't allow yourself to be rushed, extorted or roped in by outer force. You alone know what is good for your well-being and shouldn't give others the power to play with that. You have all time in the world, and mimicing others' stress will only impede alignment with your own Heart rhythm. When somebody attacks or provoces you, don't shoot back, because doing so is nothing else but picking up the other's energy and placing it over your own. Instead, go within and don't give up your peaceful posture." The turtle is impervious against cajolery and doesn't accept energetic vampirism, knowing that there is an infinite ocean of unlimited love energy resources within itself that it can draw on whenever necessary. Those with the turtle as their spirit animal are apt cultivators of self-empathy and self-love.

Spiritually dark aspects:

Sometimes turtles skirt challenges altogether. With a rock-solid shell that is meant to bounce off energetic attacks the turtle might fall into a mode of hiding its vulnerability even when it might be the exact solution to a problem. More so, expressing and sharing one's vulnerability is the cornerstone for building true friendships and love based on trust. Hence, the forgoing thereof might also deprive us of splendid experiences shared with like-minded Souls. Embracing our vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness, and if we don't accept this inherent part of our nature then this will be our sorest spot that if hit will entail profound Soul distress. We become just like a turtle lying on its back with an inability to regain our feet unless receiving the compassionate help of others.
