How do we choose the right spiritual leader or Guru?

in #spirituality6 years ago

In my opinion, assessing a teacher is a multidimensional thing, meaning that there are various aspects that can be used to assess. One of these aspects is the character or personality of the person. Other aspects are social aspects, doctrinal aspects and viewed from the aspect of the system.

  • Did he bring a teaching that was in line with his lineage? In accordance with the teaching theme of the type / religious group?

  • Does the doctrine of its teachings bring broad benefits to humanity without distinguishing groups?

  • Is the doctrine of its teachings special, hidden, closed etc.? (Be careful because you have to wait for a certain amount of time until the 'secret' (esoteric) is revealed, in which case you have unconsciously been indoctrinated and brainwashed in that period. In this case you have been ensnared and probably not can see clearly again).

  • Does the doctrine of his teachings teach positive things and the virtues that are commonly acknowledged by the community? (If there is only one thing

contrary to the general norms accepted by the community and religious traditions in general, so be careful).

  • How do parties from other religions / other sects view their teachings? Read the review or ask about the pros and con.

  • Does the teaching have a theme of rebellion against common life norms and values, or conform? (If it is rebellious, be careful, be careful and review it more intensely. Usually cult is rebellious. Being reserving is safer).

The most important thing is that spiritual life is a mysterious and unstoppable process (always in accordance with our maturity). Therefore, it is too naive to hold a teaching as the most correct. Besides that, you can just have a variety of teachers in accordance with the stages and in accordance with your needs to focus / highlight in what areas.

For myself, facing that reality, the most important thing is:

  1. Ehipassiko. Search yourself, feel yourself, the value of direct experience.

  2. Do not swallow anything, teachings from anyone. Be original.

  3. Many questions, many ask for opinions both pro and con to parties inside and outside the college.

  4. Keep open mind, and maintain sanity of mind. It's good before joining, record the values of your life, mission and goals in your life.

Also record your analysis of the group, whatever you expect. After the time of joining the group, review, record and review the changes. Does that give a virtue? Ask for judgment from people around you, your family.

  1. A lot of searching for information about spiritual life, read lots of related books, both related directly and as if they were of much relevance.

  2. Stop and take a moment to rest or withdraw from the group when you see an abnormality or hear something that you cannot accept with reason and your conscience. Calmly, first study before plunging into activity. If indeed you cannot accept and contradict your conscience, do not hesitate to declare resignation. You are responsible of your own.

  3. Be yourself. The true spiritual path is a process for yourself rather than copying what the teacher teaches. The teacher is just a guide, you have to find your own way.
