SPIRITUAL FOOD 4 THOUGHT - DEBT BONDAGE

in #spirituality6 years ago

It is a choice.

We are in a debt epidemic in America, even within the church. Far too many choose to bring this curse upon their families, and in doing so, many reap what they sow.

An honest evaluation of what God reveals in the Bible shows us another way, His way. We are not to choose to go into debt, for debt is a curse. Moreover, the borrower is slave to the lender, and we are not to be the slaves of any man, for we were bought with a price.

Choose this day, but choose wisely.

This message is one that is so far removed from what many believe these days that I wouldn't be surprised if most people literally couldn't understand the concepts you're talking about. In fact, our whole US economy is built on the exact opposite of this. Rather than loaning to others, our economy is based on consumers' "faith" in the economy and their ability to take out more debt. It's one of the reasons it's all going to collapse.

From a biblical standpoint though, I think you're right on. It's a matter of choosing who we want to be our master. If we want the stuff now and want what we want, then the bank will be our master. If we are willing to not get as many shiny new things right now and be obedient, then God will be our master. As we know from Matthew 11:30, God says "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." Light sounds a lot better than heavy when you're carrying a burden!

Oh yes, I'll take His light burden over the crushing yoke of bondage that debt creates! Thanks for being willing to listen and consider.

I've spent enough time not listening and not considering, so I'm doing what I can to fully embrace and trust that His way is best. Fortunately, my wife and I don't have a bunch of debt, but in this crazy world we live in, even what a person has can so quickly be taken away. We're trying to be intentional about pressing into God during the difficult times rather than getting mad or frustrated because of them. He knows what's going on. He knows what we need. And this isn't our home. So even if things don't go our way and we end up getting removed from Earth, we'll be going to a better place. For now though, we try to bless others and trust that God will continue to provide.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Being debt free has been a huge blessing to our family. I completely agree with everything you say here. What is common, is not always correct. Use your own brain for every decision instead of following the masses. I teach my children this regularly. I cannot say it enough. No one "needs" debt. You can buy a car to get you from point a to point b for a few hundred bucks. Anything you need to know you can teach yourself for free, or if you do need to go to college, pay for it in cash. Work first, buy the item later, not the other way around.

Very nice! Thanks for the encouragement!

You can buy a car to get you from point a to point b for a few hundred bucks.

Amen to that. You can buy an ENTIRE car for what many people pay each month in car payments.

Thanks for the spiritual food. Praise the Lord:))

Thank you for checking it out!

@papa-pepper you really made me Think Hard Today. The One thing that I realized is that having my home and a mortgage on it is just another yoke that the banks keep around your neck. I am actually going to consider selling my house because I have realized that even if I payed off the mortgage I am still a Renter anyway and I won't have to have any debt.

You keep thinking on that, and see what happens. Thanks for viewing, and for letting me know.

Amen!! I can attest that debt causes conflict in marriage. My husband does not see it the way I do. Although, I am patient with him, because I see God working on him.
Even when one was being lent to, we see God had a sabbatical year of release, that after the seventh year, the one being lent to was released from their debt. This is starkly different than the bank system of today.

Glad to hear that you are being patient, and good point on the last part!

This is a great post and I can say listening to the video gave me some more understanding. However, we cannot separate some thing when it comes to owing debt. I think there are good debt and bad debt. One can receive a loan either from someone who is willing to help and pay back or from the bank. I think there are times in which obtaining loan is inevitable, and this kind of loan I will refer to as good. The author of the video above didnt mention alternative when people dont have an option than to take a loan for something urgent and time bound.

Wants vs. Needs comes into play in these situations, and I think that there is rarely a need that requires a loan. If someone desires a loan, an interest free loan from a brother would be far better.

rarely.

I agree with the choice of word here.

If someone desires a loan, an interest free loan from a brother would be far better.

Yes. I will choose this anyday anytime. However, necessary loan though.

Right, any borrowing with the intent to repay is a loan. Thanks @turpsy!
