Balance Of Opposites

in #spirituality5 years ago

We're going to do a bit of symbolism today. It's not really "my thing" as I'm not particularly spiritually inclined, so to speak. Or at least that's what I've believed for most of my life. Still, there are some deeper truths about existing that I've only managed to learn with time, and as one becomes better at reading or recognizing them, you'll see these symbols and themes everywhere...

The word "balance" has many uses and meanings, but they're all derivatives of the word's primary description: "An even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady" (Oxford English Dictionaries). A balance, or scale, is a device consisting of a rigid beam horizontally suspended by a low-friction support at its center, with identical weighing pans hung at either end, one of which holds an unknown weight while the effective weight in the other is increased by known amounts until the beam is level and motionless. It's the scales opposite sides that have to be in equilibrium: the balance of opposites.

This balancing of opposites is the deeper truth that's found all over the world and all over human recorded history, even in traditions that survive till today. It's everywhere, it's good and evil, it's yin and yang, white and black, left and right, female and male, it's happy and sad, sun and moon, day and night, dead and alive, to be or not to be... Without realizing it every moment of our lifes, our existence is shaped by a myriad of balancing acts, a constant seeking of equilibrium between seemingly opposing forces that are in reality unified in the harmonious balance they create. The best stories, new and old, deal with this all encompassing truth of existence, and touch us deep inside because we recognize the balance, or lack thereof, within our-selves, as well as the balance that exists between our inner world and the external universe depicted in there.

Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Terminator 2 are good examples of modern stories that excel because of this quality. Remember how Ghandalf was only able to reincarnate as Ghandalf The White, after having been slain as Ghandalf The Grey, by the Balrog? This monster was never described in detail in the book, only that it was made of black shadows and flames. From gray to white through black. Star Wars not only has The Force with it's literal Dark and Light side, it had them unified in Luke Skywalker who felt the urge to make peace with Darth Vader, his father and representative of the Dark Side, before he could go on and become the last Jedi. Luke struggles from within first, on Dagobah under Yoda's guidance, before he physically takes on Vader and The Emperor. And he had to fail first, before he could succeed.

Maybe surprising, but this quest for balance between opposites is even better depicted in Terminator 2. Sarah Connor becomes less human in this film as time passes by, to the point that she's almost able to murder a family in cold blood, to prevent Judgement Day; she's so single minded, so focused on this one goal, that she almost resembles a machine, a robot, a terminator at that point in the movie. It's brilliant storytelling that it's the real Terminator that has the opposite arc; he becomes more human as he practices how to smile and learns how to talk more like a human, together with John Connor, Sarah's son and future leader of the resistance against Skynet. The real tragedy at the end of the movie, why no one with an ounce of emotion can hold back the tears when the Terminator says farewell forever by letting Sarah lower him into a pool of molten metal, is that for the briefest of times, John had two parents...

According to almost all ancient beliefs, the soul resides in the balance of all opposites, and it even has a physical location in your body; it's what western anatomy labels as the pineal gland, a part of the brain that's located right behind the middle of your forehead. You might know it as "the third eye." It's one of the seven Indian chakras, centres of spiritual power in the human body. But it's everywhere, in every culture and every time. When a sculptor makes a figure out of a block of wood, that figure has always been there, all the sculptor has to do, is to remove the extra, unneeded bits. In design the use of "negative space" is crucial to success. Without these opposing forces, there would be no shape or form to the world we live in, it would be formless, chaos.

I'll leave you with a very interesting speech I saw not too long ago by Richard Cassaro. I don't know this man, nor his credentials, but he tells a compelling story about how mankind has known this spiritual trinity of two opposites forming one balance for ages. And he presents us with a lot of archaeological evidence indicating that this knowledge was spread world wide, and how the "all seeing eye" in masonic imagery (like on the dollar bill) is not God's eye, but our own "third eye." Lots to consider here, but what I hope you'll come away with, is the realization that opposites don't HAVE to clash, not even in ideological online conversations ;-)
