Onboard rally video of the day - Liatti and Pons with Subaru Impreza 555 Group A

in #sport6 years ago

Hi, Steemers!

Piero Liatti is my favorite Italian driver. First time I saw him in a rally car was when driving a privately entered Lancia on New Zealand Rally in 1992. From the next season he was signed by the Subaru World Rally Team.

He was always kinda 3rd driver in the team, behind McRae, Sainz or Eriksson. Maybe it's easier to say that he shared a 3rd driver's seat at Subaru with Swede Kenneth Eriksson.

I don't know why I liked his style of driving but I just did. He has a one win and it's the most prestigious - Monte Carlo Rallye 1997. Every rally driver has a dream to win the Monte Carlo Rallye and Liatti won it.

His best years was when he had Fabrizia Pons as a co-driver. He had constant results with some retirement here and there. After the split with Pons, experienced Carlo Cassina became his co-driver but the results were missing.

He started to change the teams after Subaru: he drove for Seat, Ford and Hyundai (all works teams). I remember that his final WRC rally was in 2004 with the small Peugeot 206 Super 1600 on some gravel WRC rally (I think that was the first Rally Sardinia edition in WRC). He retired from the rally because of the broken suspension. But I remember that said: 'The engine is revving up to 9000rpm and I have a feeling that it will explode any moment!'

That was it from Piero. These days he drives Rally Legend events and he supported a privately entered Italian driver (son of Prada firm boss).

And yes, he is my friend on the Facebook :)
