History

The construction of the stadium began in December 1925, at the initiative of the then “rossonero” president Piero Pirelli, in the San Siro district of Milan, where he got his first name (Nuovo Stadio Calcistico San Siro). It was inaugurated on September 19, 1926, with a "Derby della Madonnina" between the A.C. Milan and the F.C. Internazionale

The stadium was owned by A.C. Milan until 1935, the year in which the "rossonero" club transferred its property to the municipal government, despite the fact that it continued to play its matches at this stadium at home. From 1947, also the F.C. Internazionale started playing at home in this stadium, sharing locality (rossoner) and (neroazzurri). On March 3, 1980, the stadium was officially renamed Giuseppe Meazza, two-time world champion with Italy and former player of both city clubs.
