The City of Manchester Stadium, known since 2011 as Etihad Stadium for sponsorship reasons, 1 also known as COMS or Eastlands, is a stadium located in the city of Manchester, which is the official stadium of the Manchester City. It was originally designed for Manchester's failed bid to host the 2000 Summer Olympics. Finally, the stadium was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games with an economic cost of its construction of £ 110 million. After the end of the games, the stadium was turned into a soccer field and became the usual headquarters of the Manchester City Football Club, which plays in the FA Premier League. Manchester City left its former Maine Road field in 2003, signing a lease agreement for which it could play its home games at the Manchester City Stadium for 250 years.2 Its address is Rowsley Street, Manchester M11 3FF.

History:

Building

The first plans for the construction of a stadium to the east of Manchester arose as part of the city's attempt to host the 2000 Summer Olympics. The city of Manchester commissioned the design of a stadium with a capacity of 80,000 spectators in some land without construction colloquially known as Eastlands. However, in October 1993 the games were awarded to the Australian city of Sydney. Subsequently, the city of Manchester successfully presented its candidacy to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games, in which the designs made for the Olympic candidacy were used.

In 1996, the stadium competed with Wembley Stadium to become the national stadium, but the funds were used for the construction of the new Wembley stadium located where the old one was. In December 1999, then Prime Minister Tony Blair laid the first stone for the construction of the stadium. The stadium was designed by the engineering and construction company Arup and built by the construction company Laing Ltd., with an approximate cost of 110 million pounds, 77 of which were paid by Sport England and the rest by the City of Manchester.

To host the Commonwealth Games competitions, the stadium had a low tier around three sides of the running track, and a second upper tier on both sides, with a provisional tier discovered on one of the bottoms . The first public event that hosted the stadium was the inaugural ceremony of the Commonwealth Games of 2002 on July 25, 2002. Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony was Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. During the ten days of competition, the stadium hosted all the athletics events and rugby matches 7. In the stadium four records of the Commonwealth were achieved, including the women's triple jump and the women's 5000 meters.

At the end of the games, the works were carried out to turn the stadium into a soccer field. The decision to turn the stadium into a soccer field received criticism from some athletic figures, such as Jonathan Edwards and Sebastian Coe, 5 but remodeling was necessary to make the project economically viable in the long-term future. The athletic track surrounding the pitch was removed and the ground level was lowered to add an additional tier. The provisional tier was dismantled and a structure similar to the one in the opposite fund was constructed. These works lasted a year and allowed to increase the capacity in 12 000 seats. Manchester City F. C. moved to the new field in the 2003-04 season. The remodeling cost 35 million pounds, paid by the club itself.
