Greetings Steemians!🌟

During FIFA World Cup Football 2018, news of clashes between the English and the Russian football fans spread, which authorities declared as small scuffle between the English fans. However, it again reminded the past events of violence in sports. I wonder why people become so obsessed with games because games should be taken as games. They should be for fun and enjoyment, not for setting scores with the opponents. I thought about this problem and tried to find out the reason behind it.

Why sport events are becoming violent day by day?

Man is naturally a violent animal

Humans are the supreme species in this world. Nothing can challenge our authority on this world. We could become the master of this world because our forefathers were violent and didn't hesitate to kill others. They killed innumerous animals and other human beings to maintain their suzerainty over others. With the advancement of human civilization, efforts were made to curb man's violent tendencies. Religions and the state formed various laws to stop man to indulge in unnecessary violence. One of the reason behind the formation of ‘Doctrine of karma’ and concept of Heaven and Hell was to check an arrogant, egoistic, bloodthirsty and violence loving animal. However, man didn’t change.

Organizing sports events were also a method to stop unnecessary bloodshed. To a great extent sports are less violent forms of battles and wars. Man can release the pressure of rushing testosterone in his blood by involving in sports activities. He can satisfy his ego without involving in bloodshed. Without killing others he can also feel himself triumphant and victorious.

Could sports change him?

Despite of sincere efforts, sports events are not free from violence and fights. Sports events are not just a matter of fun for many. These days lot of money remains at stake in sports events and games. No amateur players take part in these sports events these days. These games and sports are played by highly professional players and winning is everything for them because only continuous winning decides the future and career of players. Hence, they want to win at every cost. Even if they have to take help of unfair means or have to indulge in violence, they will not hesitate.

There is also many other things make matter complicated. Our modern day politics fill our hearts with the sense of national pride. Every matters in which one nation involves with other nations, it becomes a matter of national pride for the citizens of that nation.

Sport events are not free of the feeling of national pride. These days a lot of people view these sport events in stadiums and these events are also broadcasted live on television that inspires players to perform extraordinarily. Players feel a lot of pressure on themselves which can cause skirmishes with the opposite side.

Even spectators are not spared. They also feel the rush of hormones in their veins which puts immense pressure on them. Media is also responsible for instigating people to become violent as media plays with the sentiment of the players as well as the spectators. Media sensationalizes these events and creates a hype which results in violent behavior of players and spectators in sports events. We regularly read or watch news about the violence in sports events and forget about them after a while. We become accustomed to these events which is not the solution.

How to prevent violence in sports?

  • Interaction with opposite side players: This is necessary as it creates a healthy, friendly environment between the players which prevents them from violence.

  • Ignite a sense of sportsmanship in the player’s heart: Sense of sportsmanship teaches us it is not important to win a game, but it is important to participate and accept the win of the opponent.

  • Coaches should be trained: Coaches should be trained to inspire players for keeping good behavior. They should be able to teach about the values and good character. Sometimes, coach becomes over ambitious which results in over aggressive behavior of the players. Such coaches should also be made responsible for the erratic behavior of the players.

  • Parents meeting: Coaches should also advise parents about the value of good behavior. They should also teach sportsmanship to them so that their over ambition may not result in their children’s offensive behavior.

  • Unbiased actions of referees and arbitrators: Many times biased action of referees and arbitrators instigates players to take the path of violence. It also inspires spectators to be violent. Hence, decisions of referees and arbitrators must be unbiased and free of ill will. If they commit any mistake intentionally, they must be sacked.

  • Imposing of penalties and fines if, needed: sometimes it becomes necessary to impose the fine or penalties on unscrupulous and violent players. But rules in this regard should be clear and uniformly be applied against the violation of rules without any discrimination. Quantum of penalties should be same for the same level of crime.

  • Media should understand its responsibility: Media should not sensationalize sports events and should prevent itself from creating hype in these events. These events should not be depicted as a war between two nations or two parties or two men.

I think these are the reason behind the violence in sports. If, we know the reason behind the problem, we can also solve the problem.

It was an interesting read. Nice work @akdx.

A very Interesting article it is. I can't say I am in full agreement with your views, but I loved some of the point made. Especially, about the unbiased panel. Most of the times the wrong action from a referee ignites the fan base.
