in #sports6 years ago

Last weekend, motorsport did not let us get bored, the stages of the World Rally Championship, as well as the Formula 1, were finished on Sunday. In this article we will analyze the WRC stage which was held in Italy. He was much more interesting than the confident victory of Sebastian Vettel.

It all began on Friday with heavy rain, which plentifully wet the meandering gravel roads, and the fog added additional difficulties. Started the first Thierry Neuville lost a few seconds on a slippery gravel track, but in the end still entered the top five. Leadership after the two sites captured Andreas Mikkelsen, but further the Norwegian could not keep him and Sebastian Ogier walked around him. The current WRC champion who lost the last stage in Portugal for 18 seconds ahead of the nearest pursuer - Neuville. Ogier, like Neuville, was the first to start and, having accepted the loss of precious seconds, hardly expected that they would lead. But the departures of Ott Tanak, Andreas Mikkelsen and Teemu Suninen helped them in this. Jari-Matti Latvala and Esapecca Lappi took third and fourth places respectively. Five of the best closed Mads Østberg.

On Saturday, the battle between Neuville, who took the lead in the championship, and Ogier heated up, they shared only 3.8 seconds. The advantage earned by Ogier on the night special stages melted in front of Monte Lerno. Also, both drivers had to face problems. Sebastian Ogier lost his engine at the start of Ittiri, and Thierry Neuville received a puncture in the next stage. The fight also unfolded and for the third place on the podium. Jari-Mati Latvala and his teammate Esapecca Lappi. Latvala could not tear himself away from the pursuer for more than 5 seconds and eventually got the generator damage and was forced to leave the track. Hayden Paddon and Mads Østberg after the retirement of Latvala made a duel for the vacant fourth place.

On Sunday, an exciting struggle with the times gained momentum and before the final 6.96-kilometer stage Ogier leadership was only 0.8 seconds. There was already no caution, both made mistakes on the dusty stretch of the track, but Neuville was able to narrow the gap and finish with a 0.7 sec margin after winning his third rally in the season. For the entire 45-year history of the WRC is the third dramatic race. Also after the finish, attention was drawn to the incident with the French racer. During the passage of one of the speed tests, a map was not selected, which was later delivered to him by Ott Tanak. The rule prohibits such a transfer from third parties. In toga, the crew received a penalty of 22 points, and the M-Sport Ford team 18 points. However, the penalty was suspended and will only be applied if the team repeats such a violation.

Well, the third place on the podium was won by Esapecca Lappi, with a large margin from his pursuers the Finn took his first podium in the season. Hayden Paddon was fourth ahead of Mads Østberg in 15.7 seconds.

Also worth noting success in WRC2 Jan Kopecky, who became a winner bypassed Teemu Suninen and came close to the time of Ott Tanak, which eventually became the eighth.

The championship takes a short break, after which it will resume on bumpy gravel roads in Finland on July 26-29.

So, on the break leader of the championship with a margin of 27 points goes Thierry Neuville (149 points), second behind Sebastian Ogier (122). The third place is kept by Ott Tanak, he has 77 points.
