Individual Positions of netball
In netball we have a team of 7 players which are on court for the game being played. You are allowed to have reserves, but each players on the court have a specific place to play, as well as different skills to be in that position.
As a coach, you must make sure that you play the players in the best position possible. This will also help you as a coach to choose the team, with the skills required below.
On a netball court we have 7 players:
- GS - Goal shooter
- GA - Goal attack
- WA - Wing attack
- C - Centre
- WD - Wing defence
- GD - Goal defence
- GK - Goal Keeper
Each of these players must have the following skills to be considered for a team. Remember that you can still work with players who doesn't have the required skills yet.
Below are examples of skills required for fitness for each of the individual positions.
Goal shooter
- A shooter must be able to take the ball at height
- Must be able to give short strides when moving around.
- A shooter must be accurate on goals about 90% of the game.
- Must have speed over short distances.
Goal attack
- Must have speed over short distances
- Must be able to change her pace as well as direction of running
- Must come open for centre passes
- Must know when not to move into the space of the shooter
- Go for rebounds when shooting a goal
- Must have an average of 90% accurate goals per game
Wing attack
- Must come open for centre passes.
- Must be able to change pace as well as direction
- Must have speed over short distances
- Assist the shooters at the circle edge
- Must be able to send passes into the direction another player is running
- Must be able to attack as well as defend
Centre
- Must be able to change her pace as well as direction to come open and receive the ball.
- Must make every centre pass work.
- Must be able to make quick decisions on court.
- Must assist the shooters at the edge of the circle.
- A centre must not receive every second ball on court, she must not play in the other players space.
- Must be a good attacker, as well as defender.
Wing defence
- A wing defence must be able to come open for centre passes, but only about 2 per game.
- Must have speed, be able to change her pace and her direction of running.
- Must be able to move around the opposition in confined spaces.
- Must be able to pass accurate balls to receivers.
- Must be able to defend her opponent at centre passes.
Goal defence
- One of the most important skills of the goal defence is to keep the Goal Attack out of the shooting circle.
- Must do first and 2nd defence at centre passes.
- Must be able to receive and throw balls in different directions.
- Must have pace and be able to change her pace and direction of running
- Must have speed over short distances
- Communicate with other players on court, especially the Goal Keeper
Goal Keeper
- The goal keeper must talk with the goal attack when she enters the shooting circle.
- Must go for the rebound as soon as the ball leaves the shooters' hand.
- Must have speed, be able to change her pace and direction.
- Must be able to throw a ball in any direction, and must also consist of the ability to make quick decisions.
- Must try to keep the shooter out of the circle.
Remember that these are only a few skills required by different positions. Each player on court, must be able to attack, defend and communicate.
