Netball positions and where to play

in #sports6 years ago

In the previous lesson, we saw that there are 7 netball players of each team on a netball court.

In today's lesson we are going to have a look at where each of those players are allowed to play.

7 Players on court

  • GS - Goal shooter
  • GA - Goal attack
  • WA - Wing attack
  • C - Centre
  • WD - Wing defence
  • GD - Goal defence
  • GK - Goal Keeper

A netball court is divided into 3 equal parts.  The first third of the court has the goal post and circle, the 2nd third has the centre circle and the last third has another goal post and circle.

Each player has a spesific third to play in, if the step over the line, the are blown for offside.  This is a very important basic especially for players that just started netball.  They must know where they are allowed to play at all times.

When defending, a player must always be 3 feet away from their opponent, otherwise they will be blown for obstruction.

Goal shooter and goal keeper

The goal shooter and the goal keeper play against each other.  The shooter must get the ball through the netball ring and the keeper must try to defend the shooter from doing so.  These two players are only allowed to play in the goal third.  They are obviously allowed to play inside the circle, as this is where they must either try to score a goal or if you are the goal keeper, defend the ball.

The shooter tries to shoot a goal, and the keeper is trying to defend it

Goal attack and goal defence

The goal attack is the helper of the goal shooter.  If the goal shooter is in a position where she can take a shot, the goal attack will come in to help.  The goal attack is also there for a centre pass.  After each goal, the goal attack will move back to her position, inside the goal third, and as soon as the umpire blows the whistle, the goal attack is allowed inside the centre third, to receive a centre pass.  Thus,  a goal attack is allowed in two of the thirds. The goal third where her team can score goals as well as the centre third.

The goal defence is the opponent of the goal attack.  She can follow the goal attack in the shooter circle, goal third and centre third.  The main objective of the goal defence is to keep the goal attack from entering the goal circle.  This way, it will put more pressure on the goal shooter to score the goals without any help.

Wing attack and wing defence

The wing attack and the wing defence are only allowed to play in the goal third and the centre third.  They are not allowed to play inside the goal circle.  The wing attack is key for centre passes, as she is the one receiving most centre passes during a match.  Speed is of utmost importance for a wing attack.  If the ball is lost at a centre pass to the wing attack, it can be very difficult to get that centre pass back.  A wing attack must be able to throw straight, hard balls to other players receiving the ball, she must also be able to feed the ball to the shooter or goal attack.

The wing defence is the opponent to the wing attack, also not allowed to play inside the shooter circle. The wing defence must try to intercept a centre pass to the wing attack.  A wing defence must also have speed and must be able to change the direction of the ball as well as the direction of running.

The wing attack and the wing defence are allowed to play in the grey area of the example above if the wing attack team are scoring to the right hand side.

Centre

The opponent of the centre, is the other teams centre. These two players are allowed in all three thirds on either side of the court, except in the goal circle.  They are the only 2 players that can take a centre pass.  A centre pass can be thrown to any of the above players, except the goal shooter and goal keepers.

A centre is like the name says, the centre of the game.  They can give help over the whole court, receiving and throwing the ball to their teammates.
