Showtime Returns to LA

Showtime has returned. Unfortunately, it is not on the court. Phil Jackson warned Jeannie Buss just as Pat Riley warned Magic Johnson. Drama, disruption and confusion follow Lebron James everywhere he goes.

"I’m taking my circus to South Beach"

Pat Riley has firsthand experience with this. Lebron joined the Miami Heat back in the summer of 2010. Once he arrived, he quickly learned that he was “no longer in Cleveland”. Lebron was used to getting his way and making changes at his discretion. He discovered that Pat Riley “don’t get down like that”. With the Heat, there are rules that everyone must adhere to. Those rules apply whether you are the face of the league or the last man on the bench who never plays. Allegedly, the first issue arose during the initial season. Lebron wanted extra tickets for his entourage that was in town. Lebron did not go through the proper channels. Riley talked to him about it. He told James, that if he would have asked he could have gotten all the tickets he needed. But that he has to go through the proper channels.

Packing up the Tent

It is no secret that Lebron fancies himself as a GM. When he wants to make changes to the roster, he never does it directly. Instead he goes through his people. They in turn go to the GM and start lobbying for those changes to the roster. Jordan also did this in Chicago. But Jordan would go straight to Jerry Krause himself. Krause never took Michael’s suggestions. The reason is because Jordan did not know what he was doing. Case in point, see the Charlotte Hornets.

In season number two, Lebron’s team goes to the Heat management with their “suggestions”. Word gets back to Riley. Pat then comes to a practice unannounced. He allegedly pulls Lebron aside and asks him about his wanting to have players moved. Again, allegedly, the conversation centers on Pat telling Lebron to speak his mind. Lebron declines.

Riley then makes changes of his own. The Heat goes on to win two championships, so all is well. A Three-Peat was now in reach; something that Lebron desperately wanted. Michael did it twice. Kobe did it once and almost twice. In season number four, the tipping point is reached. Everyone on the Heat was getting worn down. They were looking very vulnerable and beatable as a team. Supposedly there was a phone call from Maverick Carter to Pat Riley. Although it was never stated, Carter was calling on behalf of Lebron. He was asking what changes the team would be making to bolster the roster for a playoff push. Riley assured Carter that the team would make the necessary changes and inform the entire team know once anything happened. All of a sudden Brian Windhorst is on ESPN citing sources within the Miami Heat organization about pending player movement. All of the names being mentioned were players Lebron wanted gone or brought to the team. This was all leaked by Lebron’s camp. The Trade deadline came and went with no changes. Riley then told Lebron you will have to win with what you have.

Once those moves were never made, a Three Peat was no longer a possibility. Lebron made up his mind right after the trade deadline, that he was leaving Miami. During free agency, the Heat offered him a better deal than Cleveland. But what Cleveland gave Lebron was decision making power. He had no intention of resigning with the Heat. The only reason he took a final meeting with the Heat is so that it would not be a repeat of when he left Cleveland the first time. He wanted to be able to publicly say he gave them every opportunity to sign him. In fact, it has been reported that while James and Riley were meeting, Maverick Carter was literally in Cleveland finalizing a deal with the Cavs. An hour later, Riley was told the news.

The turmoil that the Lakers underwent this season is directly tied to Lebron playing GM. From the AD trade rumors being leaked, to the ill-advised trading of Zubac. It was all done at Lebron’s behest. Zubac was traded because he kept an extra defender in the paint. Lebron wanted Muscala because he could stretch the floor.
The Lakers need to bring an experienced front office guy. Failing that, they should hire Phil Jackson. If the team isn’t going to be any good on the floor, they will at least be high drama off the court.
