My Top 7 Most Memorable Betting Wins (Part 1)

in #sports6 years ago (edited)

I’ve been betting seriously on Sports and Racing for years now. Most of the time it is a bit a grind doing all the analysis and making a bunch of small to medium sized bets which are hardly worth writing home about. The key to making consistent profits is to keep a lid on your risk and have lots of small wins that all add up over the course of months or years, but every now and then there can be a big windfall that really is worth celebrating – and remembering!

Sometimes a big win comes totally out of the blue and catches you by complete surprise. One of those big surprise wins happened to me just this weekend past. It got me thinking about whether it would be up there as one of my best wins ever and before I knew it I was dreaming up an idea for a new post. I know there is not much appetite here on STEEM for my betting stuff, but I don’t care. Once I started thinking about it I wanted to write it up for my own sake, so even if nobody else reads this at least I’ll get some enjoyment out of writing it myself.

So here it is, my betting highlights reel from the last few years. I present to you My Top 7 Most Memorable Betting Wins. They aren’t necessarily the biggest wins I’ve ever had but they are the ones that I remember most fondly.

#7 : Cronulla Sharks Grand Final – October 2016

I normally play the NRL Futures market each year and in 2016 I had backed the Sharks heavily before the season even started. This Grand Final was against the Melbourne Storm who were the Minor Premiers and the benchmark all year. I often hedge throughout the year and I had put a bit on the Storm too so it was one of those great Grand Finals where I had both results so I was either going to win little or I was going to win BIG. I was out to watch it at a reasonably classy pub with my wife who is a Sharks supporter. The Fairytale Factor was firmly in favour of the underdog Sharks having never won the comp before and this was potentially the stalwart Paul Gallens last shot at the title. My wife rarely likes to bet, but before the game she asked me to put some money on Andrew Fifita for the Churchill Medal (best player) and I said “Nah, he might be the best but they’ll never give it to him” so she said “Ok, put it on Luke Lewis instead”. Sharks come from behind to win 14-12 as Andrew Fifita crashes over for the match winning try in the 69th minute and is best on ground but Luke Lewis wins the Medal. We had a great atmosphere and a top night winning approximately $3,000 AUD.

#6 : Ryobi Cup Final – February 2012

This was early in my professional betting career so it was pretty huge at the time. The Ryobi Cup was the Australian One-Day Domestic Cricket competition played amongst the State teams and I had been betting heavily on South Australia to win the title in the Futures market all season. They got the wobbles a bit heading into the Final and so I was hedging a loss and trying to lock in some profit by backing Tasmania in the actual Final match itself. The Final was a cracking game that went right down to the wire and actually ended up as a TIE. This was one of those really lucky windfalls for me because it meant that my hedge bet on Tasmania to win the match was voided while South Australia still claimed the title for finishing higher on the ladder and so I still won the Futures bets. I can remember being quite stunned and in total disbelief at the time but it was my first really decent win, giving me a profit of approximately $3,000 AUD.

5# : Long-shot Horse Racing - May 2018

This weekend just passed did make it into my highlights reel partly because I’ve been having a bit of a drought lately. I’ve been focusing more on Cryptos and Stocks lately so my head hasn’t been in the betting game so much. Even though it is late Autumn here the weather was beautiful so we headed off down the coast with my wife and kids for a long weekend at a cabin near 7-mile beach. We had already agreed that I would come home for Saturday afternoon to get some work done and amongst other things I was grinding out some of the Horse Racing as I normally do. I was a bit looser than normal and on a whim I had thrown some money at a total roughie. I was barely even paying attention and I was already looking at the next race when the caller was reading through the field and my roughie was “Last of all 2 lengths away”. But as they came into the straight my horse just flew right down the outside and took them all by surprise to get up at massive odds of 150 to 1. It’s officially the longest price winner I’ve ever scored and if you’re into racing you really need to listen to this race call HERE. The next morning I headed off back down the coast to enjoy the rest of a beautiful weekend with my family with a win under the belt worth approximately $4,000 AUD.

Rather than turn this into a monster post, I’ll make another post with my final Top 4 in a day or two. Thanks for indulging and re-living some of these magic moments with me.

I have very few bets I remember because I'm more a slowly grinding out profit type player avoiding big gambles.

Only two situations come to my mind from my entire gambling career.

Party Poker Step Sit&Go 500$
Back in my very early micro stakes days when I played poker there were step sit&go's on party poker where you were able to reach the next step when finishing top 3. It started with 1$ buy-in and ended with a 500$ buy-in sit&go in the last step. I reached that final stage in a time where my bankroll was really hurting and 500$ was huge to me. I even send a mail asking if I could get money since I needed it for my bankroll and did not want to gamble. Off course they did not allow it and I was forced to play the sit&go ending 3th getting a 500$ payout which really saved me.

Canbet 700€ bet lost
I don't know what bet it was exactly but it was long ago and in a time I was still naive having reasons to believe a match was fixed so I bet way more than I should on it. Off course it lost teaching me a good lesson which I never forgot.

Really I am a grinder too. Though sometimes the opportunity is only there for a larger stake - exactly like your party poker example. Also sometimes when I play futures markets it can be a case of letting the profits run and just hedging the potential loss. Those futures plays can lead to big wins without necessarily being big gambles and that's why there are a few futures plays in my top 7.

You seem to be very good at the Belgian soccer so I am a bit surprised you aren't playing the futures market there?

I have to do with the asian bookmakers who don't really offer futures. Betfair is restricted here in Belgium (I have limited access to it on my broker account) and all of the 1x2 bookmakers limited me over the years.

This makes me stick to sides, totals and corners pretty much as I will always be able to get low juice prices on those and good limits without personal restrictions. It is one of the reasons I'm looking so closely at those blokchain projects, they can be a real game changer with the odds they are going to be able to offer.

Nice. It sounds like you need the markets to open up a bit more and once they do there will be a few other options for you to apply your edge. It would be exciting to have that upside and I think you could do really well.

Strangely enough, my biggest priced horse winner was a 150/1. Low stakes but an awesome feeling when those come in!

I used to be big into horse racing and form analysis too. If my coding and resources were better at the time,
I'd be running a DB parallel to the racingpost.co.uk with loads of custom stats to help predict some winners - I read recently that it's worked out pretty well for some!

We have a few things in common mate, but I didn't think this would be one of them!

I guess I should not be surprised since you're into analytics and being good at that is a big part of being successful with betting.

:D

An analysis trying to predict future outcomes based on a myriad of data, and then watching play out live, it backed with an exciting commentary - now that is addictive!

It's very addictive. But once you're doing it every day for a few years it can dampen the excitement a bit. One of the bad side effects is that it can become hard to enjoy sport the same way as I used to when I was just an amateur sports fan.

Facinating to see how much you have won in betting , the highest I have won is 2400 USD, and it was a football game matches where I pair six games with a higher odds. And it happens that the game work for my me as I won all six pairing games. Sport betting is something you analyze before placing your bet. Glad to see that you have won big in sport betting @buggedout

That's a nice sized win you've got there. In Australia we call those multi-bets. I don't really do multi-bets any more because it can be hard to get value on all the outcomes and if I am pre-match betting I like to bet just before the jump because then I have the most information at hand. Each to their own I suppose! :)

So you really are a good winner. 👍👍👍

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold
