Professional Sports Teams Continue To Disrespect The President. (And They Somehow Get Applauded For Their ‘Bravery’)
The Boston Red Sox are the latest team to whip up controversy regarding a White House visit. They recently won the World Series and have not yet decided whether to attend a traditional White House visit with president Trump. The Rd Sox have many Hispanic players and the manager Alex Cora is Peurto Rican. I hope that they go to the White House.
This controversy follows in the footsteps of other championship teams skipping the White House visit since Trump came into office. The Golden State Warriors are the poster team for this. They are blatantly anti Trump and the rhetoric within th NBA and NFL is becoming increasingly negative towards the president.
I’m a huge proponent of freedom of speech, and it’s the right of these played to say and feelhowever they want to politically. I just think that if they disagree so much, meeting in person would be much more constructive than insulting Trump from a distance.
Moreover and even more important are symbolic gestures of respecting the office of the president. Going to the White House is an honor that few people ever get. Regardless of who is the president at the time, the president symbolically represents the country and his office is to be treated with dignity and respect.
I know that if I were ever invited to the White House I’d be happy and honored to go regardless of what I thought of the sitting president.

Does Donald J. Trump even "respect the office of the president?" 🤔
Good question. I can totally understand why you or anybody would justifiably ask that question. In my opinion he does respect the office to a satisfactory level in my eyes. If you disagree, I can easily understand and respect that.
I also respect the constitutional rights of anyone to turn down an invitation to the White House (or any invitation anywhere for that matter).
I think that even if Trump falls way below many people’s standards of respecting the office, our democracy is even great enough to overcome that. The president is a symbol of the country, but there are even greater symbols, such as freedom and patriotism and respectful discourse.
The office is much larger than the current occupant of the White House. If only Americans more clearly realized that the White House supersedes partisanship (which I grant you, even Trump falls short of this fact quite often) the healing of this divided nation would have a chance to truly occur.
