Self defence sports or skill?
My son has been learning karate for around 5 years now. The main aim to teach him this special form of martial art was to channelize his abundant energy. He is actually good at it and wins a lot of medals and certificates by participating in various state level tournaments, but does his self defence actually works when we need it ?
Well, I really doubt that. He can surely fight with kids his age and defend himself, but if a taller sturdier man attacks him, I doubt he has the skill to save himself. His karate instructor teaches him to win games, but not real life skills to defend himself. They see it as a game not a skill that would help in self defense.
Yesterday there was a state level karate tournament here and kids came in real large number to participate from various corners of the state. There were around two thousand kids who won gold, silver and bronze while there were many others who were bleeding from nose and ears and crying. The kids were short of proper karate gears. Parents were not prepared for the situation and there was chaos everywhere. I wish India gave a little more importance to sports and made a rule that made proper safety gears necessary for all students.
Very good to hear
