English Premier League: Liverpool cut City's lead to 1 point with win vs Burnley
With Liverpool falling to second place after a spell of poor results, they were needing a win to cut Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League. Going into the match Liverpool was trailing Manchester City 4 points for the battle of the Premiership. Burnley meanwhile is at the other end of the table, fighting relegation.
It was looking to be a tough day for Liverpool at the start of the match, as in the 6th minute Ashley Westwood scored for the visitors, but Liverpool responded 13 minutes later with a strike from Roberto Firmino. Sadio Mane then doubled the lead for Liverpool in the 29th minute. In the second half Liverpool buried Burnley further with a goal from Roberto Firmino again in the 67th minute to make it 3-1. At the end of regulation, Burnley fought back and grabbed a goal at the 90th minute injury time by Johann Berg Gudmundsson. Mane then sealed the victory with a goal in the 93rd minute.
Liverpool now have 73 points, and sit in 2nd, 1 point behind Manchester City in first and 12 points ahead of Tottenham in 3rd. Burnley meanwhile have 30 points, 2 points out of relegation ahead of Cardiff City, and 3 points behind 15th Brighton.
What's next?
Liverpool travel to Bayern Munich for the Champions League second leg. Burnley host Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday.
