Rafael Nadal's record on clay was finally cut off. Nadal was forced to acknowledge the advantage of Austrian Dominic Thiem's two straight sets in the quarterfinals.

This defeat makes Nadal certainly lose the status as the number one to Roger Federer. In addition, Thiem also became the last player to beat Nadal in clay at the Rome Masters 2017.
