Cardinal legend and Hall of Famer RED SCHOENDIENST dies at 95. Yankee-statman looks at this great second baseman and Stan Musial's best friend.

Welcome Steemian friends as we pay tribute to one of the greats in St. Louis Baseball history, Alfred "Red" Schoendienst.

I remember him very late in his career and I was hooked on the game. In fact I don't remember him as a Cardinal, but a Milwaukee Braves second baseman. But baseball yesterday lost one of the classiest gentlemen the game has ever seen.

Let's take a look at his amazing career which included about 12 years as manager for the Cardinals.

Red (see the photo above) was one of the greatest defensive second baseman to ever play the game. The photo shows him turning the double play. His career .983 fielding avg is one of the best ever at the position.

Schoendienst could hit. He compiled a lifetime .289 avg. in 19 seasons. The most Home runs the 170 pounder hit in a season was 15. He was the model of consistency finishing his career with almost 2500 hits. He was a 10 time all-star. He played on two Braves world series teams (1957 and 1958).

Schoendienst was a Cardinal coach well into his eighties (above). He may have been in uniform, 74 years, longer than anyone in history. Even at age 94, in 2017 he put on a uniform at times and coached!

Red, managed from 1965-1976 for the Cardinals and won two pennants. He let the players play and they loved his laid back style.

Schoendienst came to the majors in 1945 at the end of World War II and he played left field filling in for Stan Musial. Musial returned the Cardinals the following year and Red switched to second base. See the photo of Musial and Schoendienst below. They became the very best of friends.
