The Wheel Turns

As you can see from this great chart is that teams tend to win in batches and disappear for a time. Today it is looking different as the top teams are facing more challenges from teams with less pedigree.

The wheel turns or the changing of the guard is often referred to when sporting teams who once dominated for many years lose their way. This is a natural progression that has to happen at some point. Lately we are seeing it with a few football teams and the fans can't understand it.

If we look at a team like Manchester United they had a fantastic group of youngsters come through their academy at the same time and just dominated the English league for nearly a decade, they were an amazing group. That group has moved on and it is time to rebuild again. It has taken nearly 6 or 7 years mind you to realise that the team is not what it once was and the fans don't understand. They grew up only knowing of Manchester United winning everything and it is a bitter pill to swallow.

If we look at the list of UEFA Champions league winners from the beginning in 1955 until now a handful of teams stand out. The interesting thing is these teams won them in purple patches and then disappeared off the scene only to come back and dominate again a decade or two later. Some may never come back as in life you have to adapt or die. Think of businesses such as Nokia and Kodak who never moved forward and were left behind.

Real Madrid has won it 13 times but they started off winning it for the first 5 years and disappeared for another 6 years to get their mitts on the trophy again. Thirty two years is how long it took them to lift the trophy again and in the last 5 years they have won it 4 times.

If we look at Barcelona,Real Madrid and Manchester united they are not the teams we were watching 5 or 10 years ago and the wheel has turned. It is harder to stay at the top for a long period of time as everyone is trying to knock you off. It is the turn of other teams now to sit on top and to try and stay there.

This is the natural progression in any sport with any team. I can recall the Dallas cowboys and the San Francisco 49 ers having strong teams with individual brilliance like Joe Montana. Those sought of players are difficult to replace and are once in a generation sportsmen and the teams are built around them.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this years Champions League so far as nothing is guaranteed and anything is possible. Who would have thought Real Madrid would draw with a minor club like Brugge. The bigger clubs are all feeling the strain and are going through a rebuilding phase that could take one or two years or even a decade or more.this is what makes sport interesting and exciting to watch as no one likes predictability. I am not sure if the bookies are loving it or hating it these days as finding a guaranteed banker is not straight forward. The odds for that game were 5.5/1 for a draw and 9.5 for a win for Brugge and they nearly pulled it off.

Each team has a sell by date and keeping that team current is harder than it might look. Just adding player or two each season isn't the only answer as it takes the right players creating the right balance. That is the trick and it is special when it happens and it takes time for everything to click. Fans need to learn patience as some have been spoiled over the last few years and it is now the turn of others for their turn in the spotlight.

For the sake of our national ranking maybe Bayern can do it this time - i would prefer Borussia Dortmund though but not sure if realistic.

I think most teams have a good chance of going further this year. Bayern are looking really good though and don't know if it was just a once off when everything just clicked.

having watched them yesterday losing vs. Hoffnung it might be just a wildfire :-)

That happens a lot in some of the sports here as well. If you have a good team and can hold the players together while staying under your salary cap it is pretty common. The problem is after those players bring you two or three championships they demand a higher price and soon your payroll can't afford them all.

Payroll in football is slightly different as they don't seem to have one. They are allowed to spend a certain percentage of their turnover and most of the big clubs have high income due to ticket sales, merchandising and tv rights.

I'd say there were underlying reasons behind those things you mentioned that are not controllable. For Real Madrid, it was Ronaldo departing.

I agree ,but then again having one team built around one player is not good either. They have really come down with a bump and they don't look like the team they once were.

Totally understandable. Maybe the club is adjusting to what Ronaldo's style has brought the squad. I'd say its a good decision talking about long term.

It is a hard and bitter fight for the top, but the good thing is, it is interesting to watch for the outstanding. Hava a !BEER for your wonderfull article.

Command accepted!

Football now is hard to predict and also the likes of underdogs to me is no more.

I think the underdogs all have a chance this season.
