I'm Never Going To Understand This
The photo above was taken this Sunday at the first bullrun of the 2019 San Fermin festival in Pamplona, Spain.
The centuries-old bull run tradition takes place each morning over eight days during San Fermin.
Traditionally, it was used as a way of getting the bulls from the city outskirts to the bull ring.
After launching two rockets, the bulls charge behind amateur daredevils -- many dressed in traditional white attire with dashes of red -- for 825 meters, which is the distance between the corral and the bull ring, according to the festival website.

Each year people are participating and each year people getting injured because there's no way everyone can avoid the bulls. Some are lucky, others are less lucky and get hurt by the bulls or even worse, some are killed.
Every year, between 50 and 100 people are injured during the run. Not all of the injuries require taking the patients to the hospital: in 2013, 50 people were taken by ambulance to Pamplona's hospital, with this number nearly doubling that of 2012.
Goring is much less common but potentially life threatening. In 2013, for example, six participants were gored along the festival, in 2012, only four runners were injured by the horns of the bulls with exactly the same number of gored people in 2011, nine in 2010 and 10 in 2009; with one of the latter killed. As most of the runners are male, only 5 women have been gored since 1974. Before that date, running was prohibited for women. source
I understand the tradition and that it's probably a big deal for some to do the bullrun, adrenaline junkies will never miss a chance and I guess this is a good one for them, no offense. Some would say you have to run faster than the bulls and you'll be fine but things are not that simple. No matter how good of a runner you are, the street is crowded, people are falling down and many times there's no place where you can go.
Each year you can see the event on the news, you can see how people are injured and sometimes killed by the bulls and still, it's very popular. Not only locals but foreigners are participating too. This year for example two out of three injured were Americans and God knows how many foreigners were in the crowd that made it without getting injured. Imagine a bull like that weighs 1.5 tones. It's enough to step on you and you're done.
People getting injured is just one side of the story. I love animals and can't stand to see them injured or killed. This event is not exactly family friendly, no matter how traditional or old it is. It seems like animal protection activists tried to stop this event for taking place for years but without any luck so far.
If you ask me, I would never participate or watch the event and would prohibit the whole thing in order to protect both the bulls and people but I'm not that powerful.
How about you? Would you take part in one if you'd have a chance?
Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!

Some traditions simply don't fit anymore in our times, but not everybody sees it. The only bullish thing I wish to see is in the crypto arena.
Animal cruelty makes me rage and this is just another example of it. Like you, I can't understand why anyone would want to do this. In all honesty, though, if someone is going to treat an animal like this then I'm going to cheer when it dishes out some form of justice.
