Raining With Fines

Tennis is not exactly my favorite sport but I'm keeping an eye on it, besides if you're reading the news, you can't escape reading about tennis as well, like it or not.

Last week I was reading about Bernard Tomic, who was penalized a record £45,000 for lack of effort. I'm going to be honest here, I was shocked as I've never heard about anyone being penalized for lack of effort. Usually players attend these events in order to win and in order to win so they do everything they can. This guy showed lack of effort. Maybe he had a bad day or he was indisposed, who knows, but it's still shocking.

This morning I read about Serena Williams being fined $10,000 for damaging Wimbledon court. This incident happened during practice, before the tournament started.

Fifteen players were fined a total of $106,400 (£84,950) throughout the first six days of this year’s competition, already overtaking last year’s total of $68,000 (£54,300) enforced over the full two weeks.
The heaviest fine this year was given to Bernard Tomic, who was penalised a record $58,500 (£45,000) for lack of effort in his first round clash against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Tuesday.
Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka was fined $10,000 (£7,990) for “unsportsmanlike conduct,” whilst $5,500 (£4,400) was levied against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev for the same offence after he attacked the grass court with his racquet and refused to shake the umpire’s hand at the end of the game. source

Nick Kyrgios, The Australian player was fined twice, $3,000 from the first round and another for $5,000 from the second round, both for unsportsmanlike conduct.

I remember my dad always telling us about John McEnroe's behavior and that he's been fined regularly for his tantrums. Now that I was planning to write this post, I thought it would be a good idea to check out John McEnroe's history to see if my dad was telling us the truth :) He was telling us the truth, it looks like John McEnroe was quite famous for his tantrums.

According to this article he paid $69,500 over the years mostly for verbally assaulting chair umpires and opponents, tantrums, clashing with photographers, swearing at spectators, misconduct, outrageous behavior, abusing chairman's wife, arguing with spectators, arriving late, time-wasting, walking off court, misbehavior, swearing at linesman etc. Nice repertoire, don't you think?

McEnroe was a legend on the court. He took a boring tournament up another notch and can remember his most famous tantrum ,you can't be serious" which he shouted at the umpire when the ball was called out and it had hit the chalk dust.

Apart from the tantrums he was a great tennis player - a serve and volleyer. I think people secretly hoped he'd kick off as well.
