The University of California - Irvine has announced that it will offer scholarships for a whole team of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players during the 2019-2020 academic year.

"The 'Smash' community at UCI is one of the biggest and most passionate gaming clubs on campus. We are fortunate to be able to offer scholarships to League of Legends and Overwatch players. When a donor emerged with the desire to support one of his games favorites, we knew this was something we had to pursue to create more opportunities for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player community, "said Mark Deppe, director of UCI eSports.

Scholarship players will be chosen by the University's eSports program and the TAG Smash Ultimate Club. The funds will be used to charge the six best players with $ 6,000 and to cover additional expenses.

The team will not have a traditional training but UCI eSports will provide the necessary staff to coordinate training schedules, trips, social networks, equipment needs and competitions. The training of players is expected to last between 10 and 15 hours a week, but at the same time they must maintain a 2.0 grade point average.
