Guiseley 1 : 2 Leeds United - Full match Report

in #sportstalk5 years ago

The second friendly of pre-season was played against Guiseley at Nethermoor last night with Leeds emerging the winners by two goals to one, but before the start, the two big questions on everyone's mind was will Kalvin Phillips play and are we going to get our first glimpse of marquee new signing, Helder Costa and the answer to both these questions was an emphatic yes!

Kalvin looking rather exasperated by everyone asking him if he is going to Aston Villa!

Guiseley 1 (Felix 9)

Leeds United 2 (Costa 69, Bogusz 80)

Guiseley: A. Trailist (D. Trialist 63), Cantrill, B. Trialist (McNally 63), Spencer, Bencherif, Garner, Felix, Barkers (Digie 74), Martin, C. Trialist (Starcenko 63), Johnson (E. Trialist). Subs not used: Thornton, Smith, Clayton.

Leeds: Peacock-Farrell (Miazek 45), Shackleton, Davis, White (Kenneh 74), Alioski (Huggins 86), Klich, Phillips, Bogusz, Stevens, Costa, Clarke. Subs not used: Kamwa, McKinstry, Hudson.

We field a completely different starting line-up from the one on Wednesday evening at York, and with only four subs on the bench, this was going to be a real trial.

As well as Costa, Ben Parker, another new signing started from the off as did our former player, now loaned back, Jack Clarke. Despite early pressure and possession from Leeds, it was Guiseley who took the lead with a beautiful solo effort from Kaine Felix after just 9 minutes. Felix and Aaron Martin caused us a few problems at the back and were superb throughout and despite the best efforts from a constantly twisting and turning Helder Costa who was really showing us why he is rated so highly, we went into the break a goal down.

After the break, Leeds reinforced their quality, Alioski doing what Alioski does best, taking on opponents and flashing down the touchline from end-to-end with his unending energy and speed and creating a few chances for himself including a nod down deemed to be offside by the fourth official.

It took until the 69th minute for Leeds to get the breakthrough and level the scores with a dream start by Costa, who weedled his way into the box before shooting across goal and deep into the bottom left corner. It was Costa who got an assist for the second too with only 10 minutes remaining after Jamie Shackleton lofted a sweet ball over the Guiseley defence allowing another of our very highly rated youngsters, Mateusz Bogusz to hammer the ball home and thus ensuring us of the win.

"Don't worry Helder, I won't leave you". Kalvin reassures Helder Costa that they can still play with each other next season!

Guiseley had played well and had had their chances. They gave us a decent test but in the end, quality told. Now it's on a plane and off to Australia to beat Manchester United in Perth and show them what's going to happen in a couple of seasons time when we are back in the Premier League.
