This series of articles intends to show some exercises that we use in Superliga 2 team training and some that we use in lower categories for training. We will try to include videos and other explanatory materials beyond the written explanation.

In this case we will talk about the touch of arms, but for a different purpose than the reception. The main difference between reception and defense is that in the serve we have more reaction time since the ball takes longer to arrive and the ball can come floating.

DEFENSE

We can teach many defense techniques and strategies, but the most critical aspect is undoubtedly the attitude.

Chronological order in teaching:

1º- desire to defend (attitude).
2º- how to defend (technique).
3rd - where to defend (tactics).

Some keys: (American school).

  • No ball touches the ground without maximum effort to prevent it.
  • All balls can be defended.
  • Believe that "each ball comes to me."
  • In summary: "defense is an attitude, a total commitment to the fact that it is possible to play any ball until proven otherwise (until after a maximum and sincere effort is failed)".
  • Who does not understand and internalize this will never be a good defender, nor will he have the respect of his teammates.

Technical keys:

  • Displacements: It is important that players know instinctively the movements they have to make to get from their initial positions to their final positions of defense.
  • Waiting posture: Once in the final position, the player will maintain a waiting position before the defense, it must be a low position in the toes to have a rapid reaction speed.
  • Contact.
  • Defense of side balls. It is more complex since the ball can easily escape backwards. The outer man should be climbed to get him behind the ball.
  • High defense: It is not usual in track volleyball, but it can be useful when the defense goes too far and the attack goes to the bottom of the field.

Aspects to consider:

  • the forearm pass is used for reception, not for defense.
  • Do not spread your legs too much.
  • Don't bend over too much.
  • Do not defend on tiptoe.
  • Safety rather than accuracy (objective zone 8).
  • Communicate in defense (never errors due to lack of communication).

Keys to training:

  • Agonistic exercises develop the attitude, not the technique (take it into account in the planning to alternate them).
  • In the first key stages the hitting of the coach (same as blocking).
  • In more advanced stages (from youth-cadets) it is necessary to train it with reference to the blockage.
  • A motivational environment is essential (by all players).
  • Develop the elasticity of the posterior chain and abductors.
  • All players must know how to defend in all positions!
