Three consecutive unforced errors from Dominic Thiem in the final game of the first set ensured that his dream of winning the French Open title and achieving what only Novak Djokovic and Robin Soderling has been able to achieve, was quashed.

After the errors of the first set, Thiem handed the opener to the defending champion. From that time on, it was game on for Nadal as he stepped up his game, pushing his opponent aside to emerge winner of the match with 6-4 6-3 6-2 score line.

Although Thiem got the better of him the last time they met on clay, he soon realized that the Court Philippe Chatrier was another whole new place altogether.

With the start of the game, Thiem made a strong start as well as he matched Rafa shot for shot. However, after slipping in the 10th game of the set, he soon found it hard to continue on with the intensity.

Nadal however kept on, growing from strength to strength before overpowering his Austrian opponent, breaking Thiem’s serve in both the 2nd and the 3rd set as well.

The final set saw Nadal suffer from cramps in his left arm. After taking a medical break to recover, the Spaniard went on to break Thiem’s serve for the 2nd in that set, serve out the match and cart away his 11th French Open Title.
