Surfing Sri Lanka. A jewel in the Indian Ocean.

 A plethora of surf spots

All within 30 minutes tuk-tuk drive of Arugam bay. There are two basic rules of thumb here to maximise your surf sessions whilst in the area: 1) “early bird catches the worm” and therefore get to the desired surf spot just before sunrise to beat the crowds, and: 2) befriend a local surfer that will take you to quieter spots along the coast.

(Proof of getting to a spot before sunrise)

Itself is frankly very busy and if surfers could, they would surf throughout the night to catch uncrowded waves here. Yes being busy has its draw backs, but if you come with your partner there is a sliver lining here: there are more than enough activities to keep them busy whilst you hit the surf during the day. If you are into dawn patrols then leave them in bed and take advantage of the relatively uncrowded surf until about 6:30-7:00 am: you will be back before they wake up.

(Elephant rock and yes there are elephants roaming)

Time to surf

Generally during the main surf season wind patterns are as follows: super glassy mornings where the best surf conditions are found as the swell has had time to clean up all night; strong on/side shore winds come into effect around 10-11 am, and: round about an hour or so before sunset the winds quickly die off and sea conditions are glassy again (though not as good as first thing in the morning but still pretty dam clean).

(must have more boards than sense)
