Project Management - My startup journey / part 16

in #startup5 years ago

Running a startup for a while, brings you time to time to the whiteboard, when you try to:

  • manage all your ideas
  • list all the extracted tasks
  • assign them to right people in your team
  • find a proper workflow to ensure all tasks will be done
  • a way to observe feedbacks
  • Collaborate in real time
    and the list goes on!

So you have reached the Project Management stop! where can be your startup's last stop, if you fail.

Project Management is about putting all conversations & tasks together, so the leader can get more done with less effort. There are several methodologies for project management, like Agile, Scrum, Hybrid, CPM etc. While such study will bring you a deep knowledge of this important issue, I prefer to focus on TOOLS rather than methodology, to empower you with such skills, taking less effort and time.

Again, if someone has the time and willing to learn and study PM deeply, getting through the methodologies and finding the characteristics and differences between them, will enable him/her more to manage the team and understand the needs of his/her startup.

But if you don't have such time or willing, you can use tools instead, and as your business grows, employ someone with deep knowledge of PM to implement in your organization and maximize the efficiency.

The TOOLS

There are many PM and productivity tools in the market, but which tool is more proper for your startup, is a question which you should find the answer to; especially the moment working on your project management tool becomes more time consuming than the actual project itself, you know you're in trouble!

Trello

I personally use Trello for my projects. It's an easy to use, Kanban-style project management tool that lets you create boards and cards to track the progress of your projects and teams. Trello works on all platforms (PC OS like MacOS or Windows or Ubuntu, iOS, Android).

My current project (irxp.com) is running on Trello, with multiple boards and cards and members and it works fine. KickStarter also uses Trello. The world's biggest crowdfunding platform has an obvious emphasis on collaboration. To keep its own teams on track, multiple groups within Kickstarter use Trello.

Asana

Asana is used by Uber, AirBNB and Pintrest, if this convince you it works!
The web-based tool lets each of your teams create its own individual work-spaces and then fill them with ongoing projects and tasks.
I have tried to work with Asana, found it easy to use but never switched to, from Trello.

Other startups use...:

Netflix uses Confluence - developed and published by Australian software company Atlassian
Groupon uses Basecamp - The formerly known as 37signals, an American Teamwork management software
Dropbox uses Paper - a collaborative document-editing service developed by itself.
CNET uses Planio - a web based project management and team collaboration

About the images above

I have made these screenshots from a brand new Project Management app, called Monday (check the website)
I am truly inspired by the platform and the environment, but haven't adopted it yet. When something is working for you, there should be very strong reason to change it, even to better! So I will study more about Monday, before replace it with Trello in my projects. if you can educate me more on Monday or other tools I might not have heard of, I appreciate that.

I have used Trello a little bit, and I really liked it... Can't imagine what running a company and a business must have been like earlier before such tools were created!
