Introduction

Encyclopedia is a reference that holds a comprehensive summary of information from various or a particular branch of knowledge, which are divided into articles, and entries alphabetically. Encyclopedia is similar to words in the dictionary, but far longer and detailed. It focuses on virtual information concerning the article for which the subject is named. They are said to be written by educated and well-informed experts.

There are different encyclopedias already existing, like the encyclopedia Britannica, encyclopedia Italiana, Scholarpedia, dkonline encyclopedia, Questia, Wikipedia, and so on. The most popular is Wikipedia which was developed in 2001. It is the most used encyclopedia today, which combines a global project in multiple languages and inspiring a wide range of other online reference projects.

As we improve technologically, many existing things blend into technological improvements. This brings us to the blockchain technology. Most Wikipedias I know is only hosted on a domain. I’ve not come across any using blockchain technology (maybe there is but, I’m not aware) but I recently stumbled on one. Stay tuned as I introduce Everipedia

What is Everipedia?

Everipedia also falls under encyclopedia. Only that it uses the blockchain technology to carry out its functions. Everipedia is built on the EOS blockchain.

The Everipedia Network, built by Sam Kazemain is the first and largest decentralized encyclopedia database. Using a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, their ecosystem is fully governed by its token holders in which they can approve, reject, edits, or create network-wide rules that govern the encyclopedia, and buy and sell services for tokens on the network.

Everipedia (also known as the IQ Network) uses the blockchain technology to bring to our doorstep a world where diverse knowledge is accessible in which everyone can take part in providing value and showcasing what they know to the world.

Everipedia is listed on #thestateofthedapps and ranked 115, with a profile strength of 100%. It has at least a daily user of 51 and completes 2633 transactions per day. With everipedia, you connect with people with like minds, share your view and contribute your own perspectives, and as well dive into anything that interests you,

Getting started with Everipedia

I’ve edited articles on this platform, but yet to create a full one. This is because any work that must be done must go through a lot of research and citations to make the content original. It’s not a day job. It needs dedication and hard work to produce a well-drafted biography which is one of my area of interest.

To become a writer on Everipedia, you need to join the platform. That is much needed to have access to creating, editing contents and so on. Let me take you through the steps I followed while creating my account, perhaps, you will get to create yours from the info.

I love login in through this channel but there is another alternative.

When I entered the site and clicked on sign up, it pops up a page where I can log in to Everipedia. There are two options for users to login. The first is the logging in through Scatter, while the other is using other social media options (Facebook, twitter, and google). I signed in using my twitter account details by clicking on login to twitter, which then took me to another page where I input my details to connect to ORE ID. After login in, the app directs me to create a pin to secure my Everipedia wallet, which I did and clicked continue. That was how I set up my Everipedia account. Anyone can follow the below steps one by one to get started with Everipedia

  • Click on https://everipedia.org

  • Scroll down, locate the sign-up icon and click

  • You will see options to log in,(scatter, Facebook, twitter, and google) choose anyone you prefer

  • Input your details if not stored on your device and proceed to connect to ORE ID

  • Create a four-digit pin to secure your account

  • Done

After all these steps listed, it is easy to create and edit the contents of your niche. The explanation of some basic components will give more insight into the creation of articles and some other things that need to be known.

The next thing I would like to discuss are the main components of Everipedia, but before then, let’s take a quick look at IQ token which is the reward part of the platform.

IQ token

From the definition of Everipedia I stated far above, IQ token is the native token used to approve, reject, edits, or create network-wide rules that govern the encyclopedia, and buy and sell services for tokens on the network.

The IQ token is the unit of account on the IQ blockchain. It incentivizes Everipedia editors, PredIQt users, and other users that utilize decentralized applications in the IQ Network to create and maintain content.
The tokens were airdropped to EOS token holders as of July 12, 2018.
IQ are also used for governance, IQ token holders can vote on issues such as determining what sources can be cited for an article and IQ network upgrades. IQ tokens are also used for staking articles. This means that contributors will own their own content.

IQ token power the Everipedia network. They are used to create and contribute contents. The tokens are used by stakeholders (161.2K token holders) to vote for or against newly created articles or edits to existing ones. Contributors are rewarded with the token for any good content added to the platform. Below is the list of supported exchanges.

You also need to have an EOS wallet for your IQ token. Below are the wallets supported.

Main components of Everipedia

Everipedia has many components, but I will list the most important ones. First, I will talk about the create article feature.

Create article

One of the reasons for creating Everipedia is for users to write about what they know and have the passion for. The create article feature is the part users can use to write and publish their contents. It is just like the normal editor used on steemit, steempress, and others. Users can use the normal HTML markdown to pimp their article as well.

Already, 18.5 million articles have been created on the platform, with 202.3 reviews. To create an article, a click on the create article will open up a page where you will have to first search if your topic in your area of interest is already taken. If it’s not, you will have access to continue to the main page where you will create your article which is the editor. There, you can type, upload, set and publish your content.

Leaderboard

The leaderboard is one of the features I love on this platform. Every active user gets rewarded with IQ token, so those with the highest rewards are listed from 1 to 10. If your name is in this list, it means you are super active and you’ve created and edited a reasonable amount of articles on everipedia. I’m still a baby user so my name is far from appearing on this list.

From the screenshot, you would notice that the username of everyone on the list is not a name. They are generated for every user upon opening everipedia account. Mine is .......... So don’t be surprised if you see something like that when you sign up.

Trending, recent and popular
Every newly updated article with reasonable views shows in the trending page. It doesn’t matter how long the article was created. The recent only show the new articles created. Every new articles will show on this page immediately it is published. The popular is also another feature on the main page of everipedia. Articles with the highest view shows on this page.

Recent activities

Users can view other users activities via the recent activities feature. I didn’t know about this feature on time. This is where you will see how many votes you get on your created or edited article. The votes determine whether or not your content is unique.

The good, the bad and the ugly

I'm not talking about a film here. Just a slight look at the beautiful and the lagging parts of everipedia.

Everything that has an advantage must surely have a disadvantage, even if it’s minimal. Everipedia is very superb. I love its decentralized nature. The power given to the community to decide the fate of good and bad contents through the IQ vote enhance the creation of quality articles, which is no doubt a plus. It’s indeed a democratic governance that speaks well for the platform.

Also, the fact that contributors get rewarded with IQ token interests me. When you know that you will be rewarded for rendering your services, the already available passion to create contents in you will be geared and altered. It’s a kind of motivation that keeps a lot of writers active on the platform.

More so, To prevent bad actors from trying to cash in with ill-founded or deliberately false articles and edits, Everipedia forces users to put up a token of their own in order to submit. If their work is accepted, they get their token back, plus a little bit for their contribution; if not, they lose their token.

This also promotes good and quality content creation on everipedia.

Alternatively, the first thing that pissed me off on everipedia was how the page I wanted to edit kept hanging and timing out. I saw that Cristiano Ronaldo needs to be updated, and tried to fill in the necessary missing parts, but it kept hanging. This is not a problem with my PC. Every other tab I opened works fine. I could only edit contents that are not too lengthy. If that is a bug, it better get fixed by the team ASAP.

One great difference between Wikipedia and Everipedia

I have used Wikipedia several times to source information on the internet, and I would say my experience with it is awesome. However, there is a deal of information that does not have a reliable citations.

Many people are into article writing because of what they stand to gain. Most are not passionate writers, but the economic exigencies transformed even an Engineer to a writer. Not bad, but when the prioritization of quality contents becomes obsolete, then there will be less value in the available articles on various platforms. That is why there is strict monitoring of every activity of writers on Wikipedia. However, they recorded a high volume of substandard articles.

This is the part where Everipedia has a plus. The decentralized/democratic system helps them a lot. It’s the government of the writers, by the writers, and for the people. They are the ones cleaning up every shit with their votes. Imagine 161.2K holders scrutinizing and voting on contents. Will Wikipedia have such number of staffs to monitor the affairs of contributors? That is a question I cannot answer for now, but I think they are doing a great job.

Star rating

With my experience using Everipedia, I wouldn’t say it’s perfect but, reasonably, it’s superb. It offers its users a lot that other encyclopedia doesn’t offer. It’s also fun using the platform. So I will give it 4.5 of 5. Decent enough for any good platform.

Conclusion

Encyclopedias are unique tools where we can fetch accurate and reliable information. With Everipedia, you will not only get good information but also get rewarded for contributing your quota to the platform through editing existing articles, and content creation. It is very wide that it can meet up with any niche. Are you a passionate writer? It’s time to get started with Everipedia and give your best shot for the world to benefit.

@ckole we will not be able to enter this review into the competition. In the task instructions we asked for reviews of 'data dapps' from here https://www.stateofthedapps.com/dapps?tags=data&page=1
Everipedia comes under the category 'storage'

Thanks for the feed back, It's obvious that Everipedia is a data app, but the fact that It isn't tagged under data here makes it controversial. Highly respect your decision.

One love.
