A Review Of The Past And A Concerning Look Toward The Future

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

I remember when radio signals were adjusted with an analogue dial and tuning the station in meant tuning static out. I’d twist the dial left and right, sifting through all of the static and talk radio and, if I didn’t find anything I wanted to listen to after going back and forth a few times, I turned it off.

:click:

Some static was substantially louder than others and some I hardly noticed. I would skip over languages I didn’t understand, stop if I heard Joan Jett, skip through more static, Lynyrd Skynyrd, stop, skip some more, etc—a lot like what I do here.

Some static is louder than others but it’s still static and there’s a lot of it, it’s often easier to turn the thing off than continue searching for something interesting.

Imagine for a minute, your feed is the radio dial, #steemit is the radio, and the static is everything else. Each station you’re tuning in and out, based on your personal preference, is a particular authors #blog. The rest is static—some more noticeable than others. You want people to memorize your channel, you want them to plug your station into their presets and continue to grow your following. It’s going to require passion and dedication—instant gratification is a sickness.

Practice.

Everyone was at 25 once. Nobody ever walked on the job without knowing the trade and was handed general foreman wages—that isn’t how it works. There’s going to be some yelling, a lot of voices you don’t understand, you’ll hear things you’d rather not and there’s going to be whispering you’ll wish you paid closer attention to—everyone is practicing.

When I first introduced myself to this platform back in September, 2017, having never participated in another social networking type community, I wasn’t just out of practice, I wasn’t practiced at all. My station was a bunch of static at multiple volume levels, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing nor what you were looking for but ‘I used to make shapes with pencils about 30 years ago,’ I thought, “maybe they’ll like that!” I needed practice if I planned on graduating from cartoons—my very first publication across all social media platforms:

Did You Just Rhyme That Whole Thing?

Then I posted some other things, wrote about some stuff, shared a few photos, cracked some jokes and added volume to the existing static but I couldn’t get your dial to stop skipping my station—keep practicing. I released this drawing a few months later. Without any depth, it just looks like a bunch of lines drawn by a guy who just purchased his first set of colored pencils at Walgreens for $1.99 (“guilty”).

With time and practice, I began releasing articles you wanted to read, you began tuning into my station a little more often. My writing style was developing and I was still able to release a drawing here and there. After a few attempts at drawing some 3d realism, I tried my hand at a portrait.

The more I practiced, the more comfortable I became and continued sharing this creative avenue as it developed. With each release, I’m making myself susceptible to vulnerability while being introduced to more creativity at the same time—I even submitted material to a few @comedyopenmic competitions... and won!

I continued to branch out, I write about a wide range of topics, nothing is off limits. This article brings my total post count to 249, many of which were quite successful and appreciated by the community judging from the feedback I received. As of recently, however, my blog is lacking something—I hit a plateau or something.

For whatever reason, my account seems to have plateau’d or at least hit a slow spot. My reputation’s been on 62 for a few months I think and, although I’ve posted consistently during the past three Hardforks and never considered venturing away from the platform, the steady decline in post rewards following HF-22 suggests I need to make some adjustments.

?

I’m open to suggestions. I keep my voting strengths above that $.03 threshold to prevent any tips from turning to dust, I don’t think that needs tweaked. I acknowledge everyone that passes by my page with an upvote and a response, I have plenty of favorite authors I visit regularly, I’m curating weekly for both @artzone and @foodfightfriday. I’ve never purchased a vote or bid on one or however it works—none of my accomplishments here have been achieved unnaturally. In my opinion, my engagement level is up to par, agree?

The one thing that stands out to me when checking other accounts I follow and comparing their activity level to mine is consistency—maybe I need to work on that. If I use the analogy I used in the beginning and compare a person’s blog to a job site, you wouldn’t stay employed very long if you only showed up once or twice a week. Maybe I should post more frequently—I think I have enough ideas to keep up with it.

Posting a few times a week might not cut it anymore for someone who’s trying to increase their views. I see some people on here posting six and seven days a week and some of those are posting multiple times each day. I can hardly keep up with a couple of posts a week—I get all intense with editing. I can spend days trimming and rearranging one article (like I did with this one). I checked out a lot of your total post counts at steemworld and I’m well below the average—the post button might need turned up. What about five, is that good enough? Five days a week on a consistent basis would keep me way too busy for anything else I think, I’m in the middle of exploring the globe right now with my wife, you happened to catch me at an exciting time. I could probably do four, though, and maybe an occasional Saturday or Sunday. I’m considering changing my profile photo, too—change is good. That’s one of those things, though, once you change it, you can’t go back—it’s still under consideration. I really like the one I use at discord, have you seen it?

It’s got the DNA double helix, get it? DNA as in D and A (@dandays), Pura’s name starts with a D and, in case we haven’t met yet, I’m Arts. “D and A’s,” it’s nice to be met! I’ve been mistaken for the hot chick in the photo several times which works in my favor until they find out I’m actually the dude in the picture and the hot chick is married... to the dude in the picture.

I’ve even considered dropping real curse words, they’re always funny to read on other pages. How’fa king and sofa king might be two’fer king played out now, maybe it’s time to go uncensored—I don’t know about that one yet. I’ve often wondered if jumping around too much between topics has a negative impact and maybe I should focus on posting content that’s relative and on a consistent basis.

Consistency and practice, I’m hip, I’ll see what I can do to adjust my volume a little bit and get you to tune into my station a lot more often. As far as gaining traction and attracting more than one follower per week (except for last week, I lost one last week), I’m open for Communal Advisement. Constructive Criticism—you now have the floor.

Great paintings. I see a nice and constant evolution in your works.

I think everyone is different and I try not to compare myself to others around here. Some publish once a day, others publish 5 times a day. Some use promotion on their posts, others don't... some like to stay anonymous while others don't have any problems with sharing personal photos and information. Some of us write and share photos, others share their artworks and crafts, others shoot themselves on video...

I think there's space for everything and everyone. But since we're all very different, it's only natural that some will earn more than others.

I try to make a post everyday... but most days I simply don't have 3 or 4 hours to spend trimming and reviewing my posts, so I end up sharing a couple of photos and call it a day. Otherwise, I'll go to bed at 3 or 4 AM and fail to wake up on the morning. Also, sometimes I spend hours making a post and get no human replies whatsover. On another day I post a single pic with very few text and I get 20 replies.

Who knows!? Maybe after I retire, I'll start doing big articles more regularly... At the moment, I'm just not feeling it. Specially when, every few months, the whales of the platform show their egotistical side by changing the rules so that the large players earn more at the expense of everyone else. The fact is I haven't joined this Network to feed the whales. If this is the way they want to proceed, they'll have to excuse me if I'm not willing to put up a lot of effort on my posts anymore. I don't think the current system is fair at all.

I'm just a small fish and I have no power against their rules so I'll go with the flow: they decided to take away 25% of my rewards, so I'm feeling less motivated to spend a lot of time on my posts. I also have plenty of stuff to do outside of Steem and I've been focusing a little more of my time on that other stuff.

I think this network could be fantastic... but unfortunately, the current witnesses are too selfish and authoritarian to allow Steem to grow into its full potential. That's why, at the moment, I'm only using 12 of my 30 votes. I've trimmed away 18 Witnesses from my selection because they are all supporting a Witness I consider to be extremely obnoxious and selfish.

Sorry about my little monday rant.

Someone sound the comment of the day alarm, I think we found a winner. Don’t ever apologize for ranting on me, sir! Good morning, @trincowski, cool... so it’s not just me then!

I see a lot of the big wallets that were already getting the consistent big votes increasing in value. Without the addition of registrants, that must mean rewards are being shared less with the big pool of little fish and more inside a small circle of big fish. 🤔 Well, I sure have enough reason to put together this post and now I know it’s not just me—thanks man.

The wallets I often wondered why have such high rewards have higher rewards today and the wallets I always thought are under rewarded are being rewarded even less today.

Are you on any other platforms, trincowski? I registered at narrative many months back but I’ve never even opened the site, I just got an email from them again the other day about I gained a new follower. 🤔 Weird, I can’t seem to do that here where I’m active 7 days a week??

If I was offered a stage and a crowded auditorium where I could perform daily, but everyone in the audience had their back turned to me and I had to pay something like 50K in SP just to hold the mic, I’d be suspect of the benefits.

I registered at Voice, Narrative and Trybe but after trying them out, I never used any of them.

Despite all the politics, I enjoy the tools of Steem, I haven't found any other place with such good tools to write a blog. This could grow into something really huge, if the whales opened up their eyes.

Hello Mr. DanDays … Interesting and well written article/essay, or whatever it is... :>) You know I always have an eye out for your stuff.

Your dilemma is understandable, as 'I' have often pondered similar thoughts. If you want MY advice...it would be to not listen to my advice, so in order to make that easy on you...I won't offer any :>)))

It was nice to see some of your art work again.

Ciao, my friend.

Easiest decision I’ve made all day @angryman, thank you! I wouldn’t have been able to do this without you. 😉

Now just if all advice came across the same way.

:>) I'm so happy that my advice was helpful @dandays … no sweat my friend...it was nothing.

a view that should be remembered for the good of the future

Look at you making me work to keep up with the comments! Though I think I might still be behind on a few, but you know, it is Monday so there are bigger sweet potatoes to fry. 😉

I never can seem to tell what works on here, so I just keep on doing my thing. Engage with the folks that I like (you've been a preset on the dial for a while now), and try to tune out the static and any fish(whale)-slapping. Consistency definitely helps, but don't ever sacrifice your killer wit and attention to detail just to crank out a few extra posts a week. I think I'm up to the 400+ count on my posts, but there are weeks where I may only get one or two personal posts out. At least those I tend to get some good comments on because it's the only thing live on my page, haha! I'll still take it.

I can't wait to see your Pura portrait! I'm sure it will be friggin' amazing not only because you are a skilled artist, but because you two seem to have one of those badass connections that can't help but show through your art. No $$ on that, you get the fully Monty right there. 😜

I saw that you commented twice and came to this one first thinking, “man, I hope I didn’t sound like a sissy.” You’re too kind, I was looking for some feedback. You did not disappoint. Thank you @plantstoplanks.

I’m looking forward to that portrait too! I can’t wait. She’ll be an intriguing interview too, I know ya’all will dig it. It’s tough though, I don’t mean to sound like a girl, but we’re bouncing around a lot and not all of these places have adequate drawing space. This one right now, for example, not enough light. Nice table.. no light. Some have no table, table is too high, “wa, wa.”

I think you have a very good idea what works, young lady, I keep a good eye on you, your votes and rewards are increasing pretty nicely, congrats. 👍🏿 You got a couple of real big fish attention—good job!

Killer wit and attention to detail. You ever had someone you’ve never met say something and it really meant a lot and you just really hope they understand how sincere you are when you say “thank you for noticing?” And not just that part about connections either and showing through my art which is an amazing thing to read. 😉

You rock @plantstoplanks. I’m going to your other comment now.

I think I meant to say above, as well, that sincerity resonates more with me than anything. I think I've found that to be the magic sauce for my own posts, too. Of course the amazing wealth of talent impresses me among yourself and many of the people that I follow, but I find myself coming back to the folks who give a little something of themselves with each one. Connection. Isn't that what we're all searching for in life? 😃
