Steem separating the wallet from Steemit.com - Why this matters

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

The new Steem wallet app is up for testing.

For those of you that have yet to see the latest update from steemitblog, here it is:

https://steemit.com/steemit/@steemitblog/wallet-app-soft-roll-out-is-live

Reading through the post it looks like the wallet on steemit.com will continue to function normally while the new wallet app is being tested.

However, after a bit of testing, things will change on here...

According to the update from steemitblog:

"For the time being, a full version of Condenser will be running on steemit.com, but once the Wallet app has been sufficiently tested, the new Social app will be rolled out to steemit.com. At that time, users who attempt to access their Steem wallet will be redirected to wallet.steemit.co, so it was very important to maintain a consistent user experience. At that point, the Condenser Split will be complete."

That means that if you want to access your wallet you will be redirected from steemit.com to the new wallet app.

Which can be seen here:

https://wallet.steemit.co/

You may have also noticed there is a new warning message that pops up when you try to login to steemit using your active or owner key...

It looks like this:

This is important in helping users protect their assets on here while getting them used to using the appropriate keys in the appropriate places.

Users will no longer be able to login to steemit.com using their active or owner keys once the new wallet app is live.

Why is this important?

Beyond what I just mentioned above about security and helping people better keep what is theirs...

There are a few other reasons for the split.

According to one of the main developers at Steemit,Inc these are some of primary benefits:

  1. Since condenser (the software that powers steemit.com) will soon not have a need to handle high value keys it will be much easier to add new features to the social media side (steemit.com) without as much security review. This means it will also be much easier to merge in desired community contributions.
  2. It is more cost effective and efficient.
  3. It is an excellent opportunity for education regarding the Steem blockchain's unique hierarchal key system which helps to keep user's funds safe and secure.

In layman's terms...

It will make adding new features to steemit.com easier. It will make the site cheaper to operate, and it will help people better keep their assets safe.

I couldn't also help but think having the wallet separated from steemit.com might help when building out functionality for SMTs...

I am not sure if that was a part of their thinking or not, but that seems possible to me.

Hopefully this is one step closer to getting new and exciting things built that will add value to the steem blockchain.

Stay informed my friends.

thanks for the info

Yep, there will be a time when you will be forced to use a different key to login to steemit. Overall, it will be a good thing though.

do you know who ross ulbrict is?
wondering if you could sign a petition for clemency for him
hes doing200 years for making a website
maybe youve heard of him
much appreciated if at all possible and thanks ahead of time
have a great day jr

Yes I have heard of him. He was involved with silk road and some kind of entanglement about paying a hit man for a hit.

he didnt pay anyone all fabrications from the media and elite but yup thats the same ross ulbrict
whenever you will give people true freedom the media and govt will be there to let people know your doing something illigal by fabricating evidence that doesnt exist against you
sort of trumps collusion with russia iraqs weapons of mass destruction and so on and so on
have a great day and if you could sign that petition greatly appreciated
cheers and peace man

I am so confused 🧐🤪🧐

Just make sure you have your passwords saved and you will be fine corndog.

I appreciate the separation but I don't like the new domain steemit.co it looks like a typo or even worse a phishing attempt. steemit-wallet.com would look more professional or wallet.steem.com.

I completely agree. I wonder why they didn't use either of those?!

I guess they wanted to separate the code code visibly from the social side and that's why they decided to use different domain. I agree that their choice wasn't the best possible, but it's possible it was the first available that is cheap, as short as possible and similar enough but still distinct.

I just wish they would have finished it... IE wallet.steemit.com (instead of .co)

Of course.

This is a great sign of advancement on development well overdue for the main Dapp of Steem! The fact that Steemit Inc is back and more focused is a great sign for the future of the ecosystem!

Posted using Partiko iOS

Yep, hopefully so.

One more reason to stop using Steemit... In normal use after the change some people need to login to two separate sites instead of one which means twice the possibility of security issues or bugs despite the team saying the code could be made more secure.

Possibly, though their posting key is the only one being used on the social site which is more likely to be hacked of the two...

True... Mostly because the separation makes it easier for other sites to compete with the social part of Steemit. The alternatives still need the posting key. The problem is that they might not reject the other keys like the official site.

Yea, I think they were already competing with Steemit. You are right though, hopefully the other sites also reject other keys if the wallet has been separated out, otherwise what is the point. This wallet separation also likely paves the way for SMTs when/if they ever come.

Obviously some were already competing with Steemit, but they only had users who didn't care about the security impact of giving the master key (owner key) or one of the other keys to external sites or third-party applications. I've seen many people using for example Partiko even though its practices on inviting new users is quite questionable.

Yep, I have seen that as well.

Thanks.
