On January 10, 1972, Sheikh Mujib was released from prison in Pakistan and returned to his homeland and began to serve as the first President of Bangladesh.
Later he became the Prime Minister. In spite of efforts to create a Constitution based on socialism and secularism and in spite of attempts to run the state, he spent hard times facing severe poverty, unemployment, universal anarchy, as well as extensive corruption. In 1975, he banned all party politics, and declared himself the president for a lifetime, to curb rising political unrest. Seven months later, on August 15, 1975, he was killed by a group of military officers in his family.
