A Rant About Content Quality

I don't think we're doing it right. A lot of times people are comparing Steem to social media sites like Facebook or Twitter. We could be like them functionally, but culturally we're not like them and we're actively fighting to not be like them. Now I don't mean the censorship or the constant political bickering, or the other toxic crap that's on there, I mean more the things that contribute to those sites having literally billions of users. I think that is...

Sharing

The vast majority of people in the world are not "content creators". 99% of the content on Facebook or on Twitter, if posted on Steem would be considered a shitpost. I find myself wanting to ask, do people here really want mass adoption or not?

Right now Steem is like this tiny little village on a remote island where we're all really different but we're united in our love for our island. We love it so much, we want to share it with the world. We want our friends and family here, but the journey across the ocean is harsh and we just know if they actually could make it here they would love it. Only thing is...

Sometimes people come here and they start doing their NORMAL offlander behavior and we're like "Whoa whoa. This is Steem Island...you can't do that here. We're paying cold hard coconuts baby, and we're not gonna pay for crap like that! You better put some paragraphs and photos, and tell me a story damnit! As a matter of fact, gimme those coconuts back, here's a flag instead until you learn how things work around these parts. We don't take kindly to shitposts!"

This is not the way IMO. I think we should reward any and all "genuine" content. What I mean by that is it's something you're sharing because of some honest interest or want to share it. If you post a picture of a flower you downloaded of the internet and the only text in the post is "Flower..." This is not genuine. You don't care about this flower. You probably hate flowers, and they probably also hate you.

But let's say you have a backyard garden, and you have a lot of flowers, and you created a post with a picture of one, and your text in the post said "Looking good beautiful!" Well that would be genuine. Now either way, I'm not interested in that and I wouldn't probably upvote it, but someone probably would, because this is Earth and there are billions of people and literally everything has at least thousands of people that are weirdly into it. Like all of us weirdly into this cryptocurrency that the vast majority of the world hasn't heard of and has no idea why it has value.

I think the ONLY way to get more good content on the platform is to just get dramatically more people on the platform. For every person that you subjectively think has really good content, there will be five thousand that create content that is of no interest to you. This is an inevitable part of our journey. Don't fight it, embrace it. Just my two satoshis.

What do you all think?

Sort:

As long as they are not spamming or plagiarising I don't really mind. Quality and interest are very subjective. The kardasians is one of the most popular shows out there and all of them world famous for nothing. I would rather sit in a dark room than watch that shite and yet they have millions of fans. So for me its about following and supporting the content I like and ignoring what I don't. I'm sure someone else like it.

We only have a small group right now with a lot of similar though but if the group expands then interests will expand too.

This is exactly it. I think our culture can scare off new users as they're thinking "Oh I'm not a content creator, this place isn't for me" and our community reinforces that message while saying they want the opposite.

This is why we need filters 😄

Lots of stuff like that. The algorithms that Facebook and Google use to show you stuff you'd probably care about are billion dollar software. We gotta figure something out.

Filters can be manual. SteemPeak has a basic tag filter which does a pretty good job 🙃 steeve is doing some algorithmic stuff to aid discovery I think if you haven’t had a play with that one yet.

I agree 100 percent, as long as they aren't using bidbots to upvote posts that took them 2 seconds to do lol, or were thieved from tinternet.

i am not sure that i want to think about this, because i go in the weird thinking circle. to shit post or not to shit post, no thing really changes. i had shit posts supported by community, i had not shit posts supported by no one, it is kinda random so people should do whatever they feel like. And mass adoption will get a lot of "shit" posts so it is what it is.

Blog and let blog. Shitpost and let shitpost. :D

Nicely done and true. I don't think we should reward everything, but I do think we should not shame people for trying different things and even getting it wrong.

There's not enough DRAMA to go around.
