Hurdles to 10 dollar Steem: Get-rich-quick cons

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

Last night, @timcliff wrote a post asking what needs to happen for Steem to see 10 dollars in 2018 and I thought I would add a little post about one aspect that I think would have quite a large effect if we were able to reduce it: Youtube scam shills like Jerry.

If I had a Steem for every comment that says they saw some Youtuber saying that all they need to do is to sign up to Steem and they will make a fortune, I would have well, a lot more Steem than I do. The problem isn't the numbers they onboard, it is the general get rich quick type they onboard who, without any investigation, come in with expectation. Many of them do not spend time developing content, engaging in the community and very soon, get very disillusioned when they realize the work it takes and, still no fortune.

I find it incredible that Jerry is even still here (let alone a top 30 [#21] witness still) considering all of the dodgy nonsense he has pulled. His plans are so well thought out except, checking if they are legal or assuming he has rights to things like the SteemFest name. Perhaps legality isn't high on his agenda? In many ways, I see him much like the Coyote chasing the roadrunner, hence the images.

Public impression

In my opinion, it is these types of people that make Steem continually seem scammy and attract similar personalities as users. As they say, birds of a feather flock together, and many of the people brought in fail to do the research for themselves and instead 'trust' the shill. In an environment that already suffers from a host of issues concerning community, making it a home for Get-rich-quick scammers is not going to help the platform attract the attention it requires, the attention of serious investors.

Steem definitely suffers some kind of narrative problem but this is only natural considering that it is all promoted via word of mouth. Even account creation is largely left up to users these days. The average user might onboard a few friends and family but the most vocal and visible are the public 'personalities' and they are nearly entirely working on a model that benefits themselves at the expense of others. Coin value is determined a lot by public perception and the public see people like Jerry, not only in Youtube but, in Trending.

The bidbot stackers filling the front page confirm what the Youtube "promoters" have been saying, getting rich on Steem is easy. Of course, they do not necessarily realize how the platform works nor how those Trending authors got there. Often, it isn't until after failing to get anywhere in a month or two that people either quit or, start to actually learn how the platform operates.

On retainer

This is obviously then also going to affect the retention figures in several ways but two major points is that the fast money makers realize the work involved and leave just as fast or even worse, stay and run all types of little scams like their "famous" idols. This will affect real users on the platform also and will drive many away as the only interaction they really see is low-level scam, high-level scam and screaming matches.

The concept is to reward content and community interaction but the most visible of both areas is crap and/or toxic. It is an apt description when people talk about it being like the Wild West at Steem as from outward appearances, only the ones willing to shoot others to get what they want will thrive.

Hair-brained ideas

I like people to experiment and play around a little, to try new things and to push the boundaries but, people like Jerry are pushing them in the wrong way, they are not community orientated, they do not care at all as long as they get their personal needs satisfied. Jerry is an easy target considering his status and public cockups but, it isn't just those the size of Jerry that are having this approach.

So many of the smallest planktons are running the same scams as the largest and most harmful. Short visioned-thinkers who only have the drive to satisfy their immediate desires. They are selling themselves and everyone else short because they are so unwilling to actually learn how to be a part of the community that looks to improve the space. Some people are happy with the cents that roll in on 1000 cut and paste comments, plagiarized work that made it through the filters or a host of other useless filler material.

Looney Steems

I love the coyote, it is one of my favourite Looney Tunes characters of all-time because of the sheer idiocy of what it attempts in order to catch the roadrunner. But in the real world, when there is value on the line and immense potential to disrupt and improve current systems and help many, I don't want the coyote and ACME products to be the face and driver of change here, let alone a horde of such characters attempting similar.

When it comes to creating 10 dollar Steem and keeping it at least at that level, it is going to require some professionals to come in and re-brand Steem from the get-rich-quick scam many associate it with, into a platform with a community that is going to make the world a better place. Although, this is just a part of the story.

Oh, when it comes to people like Jerry, the GIF below is how I envisage them and their approach to Steem. Imagine Steem as the rock they are trying to catapult themselves to the moon with but, we are all attached to that rock.

Edit: I just had a read of this post by @meno that explains a lot of the Jerry background in detail and think everyone should read it.

It's great to want community building, but it's like putting 10 chimps in a room with one banana. No matter how much you plead, it's not going to end well.

When we see some sensible changes to the algorithm that governs reward will we see behaviour change.

As for serious investors, I am waiting for FCA approval for my fund. That was my main reason for coming here, to test the product. Not impressed so far.

I'd prefer you didn't self-vote comments here as it messes up the order.

Despite all the issues, not everything comes down to money here, even now although changes are needed for better distribution.

I really liked what I said ;)

Surely the order of comments depends on the platform being used? Busy allows you to reorder the comments by time if someone wants to see it by chronological order.

Your post was about getting steem to $10, so not talking about money would be avoiding the elephant in the room... Which a lot of people on steem seem to like to do.

you like what you say a lot it seems. ;)

LoL

Sorry, it's hard to get tone across in text. That must make me sound like a right sort!

Anyway, good post! Keep it up

I am not pro or anti steem. Just here to see how it works and will report back to my investment board when the fund goes live.

It might even be possible to do a takeover of STEEM or just fork it and fix the bugs using a team of business people who have experience of social media, marketing and branding

I never understood why people upvote there comments!? Almost saying hey I like your post but whatever I say is better then what you have to say.

ha! Its funny seeing new people with there 15 delegated sp upvote there comments too! lol

Hey, I don't wanna be that rock. At least put some wings on it so at the very last moment the fall stops. Those wings are called #leaders. Yes this is a decentralized platform, but it doesn't mean we don't need leaders. These should be where our #witness votes go.

I think witnesses should have some visible leadership role (at least some of the top ones) as their positions are elected. What are people basing their votes on now?

I haven't vote for any witness as of now. I'm thinking about voting for @ocd-witness because I like what that group is doing (manual curation should be rewarded). Probably @aggroed because steemmonsters was a pretty good idea. But I'm still new here, much to learn about most of these highly ranked people.

Hi Taraz. I have also thought about this. Not a good advert for Steem attracting the wrong people to the platform. They could have been right but are being miss sold on what they can do. There is also another angle as they look up to these people and surprise surprise they have a bot. Maybe they think that is how success is gained on here.

From the day he stepped on and people were excited, I called snake.

Talking about success, I think we totally need success stories.

I am sorry, but i do not see it happening. SMT's if they ever come out might push it towards the plank, but... i have too many reasons to doubt serious adoption of this crypto. Trust me i am sad to say this, after spending so many nice days connecting with the community throughout this year... but more and more often i see cobwebs on their blog as they have left... they jump back in occasionally, but i can tell that "middle class" if there ever was one, has left steemit. Maybe not for good, who knows, but quality content creators are leaving massively. And new ones? It's even harder than ever for the new ones to beet through vote bots, same trending articles ow whales voting of each other and other initiatives.

We as BeScouted have been trying to give the photography community a better UI/UX and still get rewarded in Steem for all those professional images that they share and we still do, but since we are bootstrapped guys, and did not see much support we will try EOS next. The reward system is just too broken and demotivating. And ofc i have heard all that connect with the community and it will reward you. And it does, if you do steemit as full day job. But i do not want to see it working only that way. Or maybe we are just simply not needed and solution that we are offering is bullshit :) Only time will tell.

It is a shame that so many have left (there was never a middle class though) however, not many have really come on yet if you look at global numbers. think there are more content producers coming that will slowly fill the space if distribution can happen. As far as EOS, I don't see that it is going to be much different over there considering all of the same people are involved at all levels that matter.

Time will tell what SMTs will be able to do here though. I think the first ones will fail since they will be created by people here but, if a few large, professional teams try their hand at developing for Steem, we might see some changes.

Oh, i think it will, starting from the way how witness votes will work, and many other upgrades under the hood. Not to mention token distribution that is so much more wide as opposed to steem which i believe is one of the major culprits things are not working out as they are supposed to. Which ofc was much easier due to much lower market cap of steem.

But i am sure it is too early to argue over this now (nor there is need for that really), we will have wait and see how things pickup on EOS side. It is still a blockchain that depends heavily on the community that will build dapps on it.
I love Steem for the concept, and i mean i love it it changed my life so much i am just so sad to see so many things go wrong partially due to human nature (or then it could not be called wrong actually as it worked as it was supposed to) but still did not meet those idyllic expectations which oddly enough is also a problem of a man who has those lol

I am one of the people who started off on Steem waching jerrys youtube chanel -glad I realised early it was all bs and its actually hard work on here to gain any kind of traction. Hes getting worse i looked the recent controversial post of his and read his replys its like he doesnt even read peoples comments!

The scammy image is one of Steemits biggest problems - and it ties in with user retention aswell - people think it's easy money and then when they realise it isnt they run away and call it a scam. I think in this world there isnt such a thing as easy money - the sooner people realise this the better for steemit!

its like he doesnt even read peoples comments!

He doesn't, he doesn't even write his own posts.

I think in this world there isnt such a thing as easy money - the sooner people realise this the better for steemit!

People never realize until it is too late. Hopefully the platform and those that do will move on and they can sit lamenting their past behaviours. :)

Yeah .. hes probably to busy spreading propaganda on Youtube to write his own posts!

Yeah I agree - lets hope we see some positive changes on here

Hes getting worse i looked the recent controversial post of his and read his replys its like he doesnt even read peoples comments!

He doesn't unless you contribute to his schemes and have a large amount of stake.

Wow, so much this. I have written a few times of the scammer videos that brought me here, even in my last post. I put some valuable content on here at first thinking the crap he was saying in his videos were true. I mean, he had screenshots of the trending page in his videos showing crap posts being very valuable.

I was almost one of the casualties that left based on my unrealistic expectations. Thankfully before I could power down much of the little stake I had bought, I came across people such as yourself who were framing the way the site works in a realistic view and I reshaped my expectations and actions here.

Almost no one I met when I first came that joined around the same time are still here. They came, they were disappointed and they left.

It is a relief to know that some capable people like you do your own research and realize what exactly the platform is. Stay here. Things well get better soon!

I have introduced 3 people I know to Steemit and within 2-3 weeks they were gone, disillusioned by the lack of attention they got, even though I tried to help.

If you have no tenacity or were not blessed by being born in the Chinese 'year of the tiger' then this is not a place for you.

People want it all now and have no balls for real work. The entire cryptosphere is fuelled by instant gratifiers.

I am among those Jerry dragged in here though I beg to differ on the personalities being the same. I came expecting everything that guy compiles into a youtube video and when my pathetic first post clocked $75, I assumed 'damn, he was right'! Then the second post had $0.06 and the third. I started wondering what I was doing wrong and even 'left steemit' for a while. When I came back I recall doing almost 15 posts all below $0.10 and for the first time, I was interested in knowing why. I found the chat and the rest is history.

What I did after... was unfollow him and anyone else who was or still is selling such crap. My minimal growth here has been mostly contributed by interacting with people such as you :)

Those curie hits and the like are nice but on a first post set an unrealistic expectation on the second ;)

Now, how many people would have decided to work out what was going on? not that many it seems so yes, personalities can differ (I am generalising in the post of course) but so many of them are true to form.

Tell me about it xD. I almost fainted, lol.

But honestly, they do... I wish I did what I am doing now earlier on because those who joined around the same time as I and worked their butts off are way higher in terms of ranks and reputations. Their accounts are doing much better than mine...

On the other hand, I am grateful I got myself out of that misguided path.

I can undoubtedly say majority of steemians have come here just because of jerrybanfield. All the people whome I got acquaintance with here say that they wouldn't have come here had if it was not for jerry's YouTube video! (But I got to know about him only after entering into steemit!)

People who see such videos think it is easy to make money out of here. Such is his body language in those videos. They never research on their own until they realize that this is not an easy way! Because of this improper narration steemit doesn't actually reach those who may fit!

You are in very different circles to me it seems since I know almost no one who came in because of him. Most I know had never hard of him until he started here. From what I have seen from his videos since, it is obvious he is full of BS.

I also know nobody who came in through him. When I saw some of his posts, I immediately distrusted him. He was too slippery and tried to make money from novice Steemians if I remember correctly. Your post made it more clear to me.

Maybe jerry just needs to upvote those newcomers he brings along, haha

He does. They just have to pay him for it.
